The C5 bitrate is creeping up. The latest scan on DigitalBitRate has it averaging 3Mb/s.

Looking back to when Spike launched, C5 was only 1.9Mb/s. (http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showpost.php?p=77437911&postcount=24)

Still wondering what they'll be doing with that 14mb of spare capacity. Some will no doubt stay in the stat mux pool but they'd fit a HD channel in to there no problem. Time will tell, still reckon this side of Christmas a Spike +1 will appear on DSAT platforms.

It also looks as somewhere between 16-19 MB of the mux on 10.847 V is null packets.
Last night it was showing 19 MB of null packets!

Also, on 11.023 H it is around 14.7 MB null packets at the moment.

Surely at least one or two HD channels could be fitted in to each one? They could certainly launch BBC2 HD nations on this existing capacity. BBC News could then move to a new mux?

That would help balance out the capacity. In SD, BBC1 and 2 for each nation is on the same capacity. For HD, BBC1 and 2 are together, BBC1 NI is carried with BBC3/CBBC but BBC2 NI could be put there.

On 11.023 H BBC2 Scotland could be put alongside BBC1 Scotland, and the same for Wales - although I would think BBC2 Wales in HD could be put on 10.847 V

The new capacity could house BBC News and some BBC1 regions.

    Could this be possible?

They are both peaking at 40Mb/s fairly regularly so I doubt the MUXs could manage more than 1 extra HD channel in their current form. If the FEC was dropped to 3/4 maybe you could get 2 extra channels on, but it would be pushing it, remember that site only checks the bitrate for satellite once per day, we donrt know what the situation is when prolonged fast moving pictures are shown.

    NEW

    11.493 H SR 22000 FEC3/4 DVB-S QPSK

    6801 - unknown service

This mux is either not configured properly or not yet switched on.

As a result it is not possible to tune this in. However, even doing a blind scan does not give any signal at all.

The last time 6801 was used was for BBC Red Button 1 when it moved frequency but that does NOT mean it is BBC capacity.

Wonder if they might be considering 5USA HD or Spike HD?

I highly doubt they'd be considering one of those. Surely with DSO2 in a few years they are going to have to have Channel 5 HD FTA at some point so it makes sense to have it sooner rather than later. Then, if they wanted to branch out with more HD versions of their spin-offs, they would have to get additional transponder space, a cost which I'm sure they won't want to pay, so we may never see those channels go HD. I doubt either channel has that "big" show to justify a move to HD at this point anyway.

This together with 6801 are still not tunable because the transponder has not yet been switched on. A blind scan still produces no signal

Sorry to be a grinch but, no, its not a PSB channel.
Only the SD version is under the law as it currently stands.
Its why Channel 4 HD (When it launched) was in a pay package and why 5HD can be currently too. If ITV wanted, ITV HD could be along with the rest of their HD channels.
Once the law is changed, then 5 are screwed but until then, they're free to keep it behind a paywall

Jimbo, you can remove the regional mapping info for Channel 5 now as there is only 1 UK wide version of the channel now and the old regions have now been removed from satellite.

I will remove it when the EPG is sorted out.

I have pointed out that there is only one service and it has been the case since 28 September. They all map to one feed now but each SID is still mapped to different regions.

When that changes this will be changed accordingly.

That obviously is the case but it is interesting to note what Viacom are doing with the C5 capacity on satellite.
I think they do plan on at the very least moving C5 HD to their own transponder, even if it doesn't go FTA straight away.
Then if sky is happy they could launch a new HD channel in the sky tp that C5 HD vacated.

I wonder why they are so high? If so they must be the only SD channels at 28 degrees east.
