Are applications called "apps" now?

  I think I've figured out what bothers me about "app". I see the word as a written abbreviation, like "approx" or "Prof". No one actually says out loud: "It takes approx two minutes" or "I like Prof Stephen Hawking". Same deal with "app". It's just written shorthand.
  
  Also, I think there is just something more civilised, mature and balanced about "application", while "app" seems more like a kind of caveman grunt or animal noise. "Me eat food. Me use app."

  just got an email in my spam folder from "WhatsApp". No idea what that "app" refers to, perhaps its short for Whats Happening.
  
  Won't ever find out cos I ain't gonna open it !

  I'm pretty sure Apple have always referred to software as apps or applications. I think Microsoft always referred to them as programs in Windows up until they released Windows 8.
