Saving Sharon...
There have been a number of Sharon threads since her return to the Square last year...nine months back and the once loved Sharon is no longer loved anymore sadly..
The writers fault or Letitia Dean's herself?
Still Sharon to me can be saved and for that they the TPTB need to go back to basics. There is a whole part of Sharon's life that is still unknown to her and the audience- her Birth Family.
We know that her birth Mum was Carol and that her birth Father was called Gavin but that is all we know, Sharon could have brothers and sisters out there- nephews and nieces even so why has this not be explored? Den and Angie will always be her Mum and Dad but looking at her birth family would add something to her backstory, a chance to create a new Patriarch on the Square should Gavin ever be cast.
Sharon's return has been bogged down with the domination of the Brannings and the Lexi/Lola storyline, Sharon goes from Jack to Phil in an instance without giving Sharon a chance to recover from Jack dumping her.
Where is the strong Independent woman we saw back in 2001, obviously Sharon has been affected by the death of Dennis and the painkiller storyline is playing into that- as an audience we know very little about her backstory over the past seven years- no mention of Michelle, no mention of Vicki, does she know about the paternity of Mark Fowler Jnr? but more importantly Sharon has lost her spark and she needs to recover it but how?
Make her single, get her away from the Brannings and Phil/Lola/Lexi, explore her birth family, bring her friendship with Ian back to the centre of the show. Its sad to see this once iconic character as a victim and Letitia Dean herself deserves better material to work with.
I for one am not giving up on Sharon even if some are and that includes writers who dont seem to care about her anymore...

My opinion.
The Sharon thing really annoys me. What do people really expect from her? It’s clear the Dennis’ death has affected her long term and we are now seeing a woman with severe problems. Yes they could’ve written it along the lines of ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ but I’m not sure how realistic that would’ve been.
This is a woman who cradled her dying husband in her arms days after discovering she was pregnant and less than a year after discovering her father had been murdered by her step mum. Factor into that abuse from Grant, her previous fiancé dying in a fire and an alcoholic mother (who subsequently died of the disease) and I think it’s fair to say she might not be coping.
We know at some point she turned to pills to cope – not too unrealistic. We also know she’s moved on from man to man to try and find security – I’m guessing not really loving any of them. Personally I’m liking the fact that they’ve given this some thought – her current personality is no coincidence – it’s a well thought out development based on what she’s been through. I don’t think the forum members are really getting it.
I personally think Sharon has been vilified on here and its not fair on the character or Leitita Dean.
YES. YES. YES. YES. YES.
Some people on here expect too much, just love to moan all the time or both
My guess is Sharon will go into rehab to explain her absence from the screen, and will return more like the 'old' Sharon, and not the Branning clone she became.
It seems Letitia wasn't happy with 'new' Sharon either, and read the riot act to TPTB.
Her 'break' will be probably the same as Billy's and Patrick's break this year. They don't actually leave but don't appear on screen for a while. However she could leave the square like Jack has done.
TPTB need to take one on the chin and admit that they have got it wrong bringing her back . The writing has been awful . Sharon dictating how to care for Lexi to Lola on this eveings show for example .
Its just not worked out I'm afraid . Seems like she's had a Vulcan mind wipe from what I remember of her from previous stints
I just don't know if it would be a feasible storyline to run (a genetic family member coming looking for her) at the same time as we have the Cora/Ava storyline going on. Plus Sharon seemed to accept the situation and hasn't shown any more interest in them since - Den and Angie were her parents, end of.
Could be interesting further down the line though, a brother gets curious when he finds out he's got a much older sister? But I think they would have to have a gap between Cora/Ava and this one.
I wouldn't put it past TPTB to have Kirsty's ex and his brother turn out to be Sharon's brothers.:D
Vald! Don't give people ideas!
Her acting is pretty much no different to her previous stints. Just the stories are crap.
With Sharon, I think they need to keep her on her own at the minute. Getting her back with Phil was just so rehashed nobody wanted it and everybody expected it, I think Sharon needs to be on her own - it's obvious she goes from man to man to find security, a mental health issue could be good to cover.
It seems Letita isn't happy either. Was she expecting too much? Or does she just love to moan?
She has never slagged the show off so she was not moaning, just stating a fact that she is unhappy with the writing for Sharon..
This. All of this.
If someone can provide us with a quote where Leitia specifically states she is unhappy then feel free to do so. Until then, don't make stuff up.
I love you a little bit
Well said. Personally I don't like Sharon and the way she treats Lola, telling her not to go up to Lexi, is wrong.
eastenders is a soap, and sharon needed to come back on a high, not like this wet lettuce type she is now,
tragic blonde maybe, but she should have come back taken the vic and rode out the storm that is this dull period of ee history,
But she's come back totally different to her previous stints - desperate, tragic, needy, manipulative. It's not the same Sharon at all. They need to fix her, and soon.
Couldn’t disagree with you more – that is a tired repeated formula and a direct copy of her previous returns.
I would have preferred it if she had come back with some money (I don’t like poor scrounging Sharon) but to have her coming back as if nothing had changed and that Dennis’ murder hadn’t affected her in any way would’ve been a step back in my opinion. By all means have a long-term plan where she gets back onto her feet and maybe gets the pub back, but let that evolve.
Personally I find the fact we know little about her 6 years away rather intriguing and I’m sure the writers have every intention of slowly piecing it together for us. Also the viewers aren’t idiots – they don’t have to spell everything out for us.
She’s clearly an addict which will make her desperate. She’s also clearly moved around from man to man and been in the gutter – something that was hinted at from her first week back by her jilted fiancé. Dennis has also mentioned how things never work out and they have to move.
For characters to have a long term future, the writers need to progress them. If they keep them the same you end up in situations where they no longer command screen presence which is usually followed by an exit under the whole “character has run its course” excuse.
I’d rather see a flawed, evolving Sharon than a repetitive one.
