In Turkey their idea of democracy marches on.

Seems the Turkish idea of democracy is to lock up or sack as many people as you can get away with whilst claiming it's a victory for freedom and free speech.

This is no doubt exercising Merkel's mind somewhat as Erdogan has her over a barrel - not literally as that would be vomit inducing - but the EU's door keeper can do as he wishes and she daren't utter a word as he moves ever further from democracy to dictatorship.

Perhaps the migrant deal will soon collapse and the EU will face yet more migration problems and as for speeding up accession towards EU membership that is surely dead - no doubt to the relief of many.

I am not convinced the Turkey deal is the real reason why the migrant crisis has eased.....that's all a smoke screen.....

The Balkan route borders has stopped the flow.

Do the Americans imprison thousands of politicians, journalists, teachers, university professors and liberal democrats because they don't like the government's views now then?

Turkey is at a crossroads quite literally, between 2 main factions fighting for the soul of Turkey - Erdogan's increasingly Islamist East looking and secularists who look west and want to uphold its secular constitution. Neither supported the coup. Indeed all the coup achieved was solidify Erdogan's attack on human rights and freedoms.

excellent post could not have put it better.
Erdogan is Turkey and there is no other way to describe dictatorship.
Egypt was saved from the Muslim brotherhood with the connivance of the west yet we sit back and praise what is happening in Turkey under Erdogan.

Wonder how Merkel and the EU view the latest from their friend Erdogan?

"On Wednesday, Erdogan declared emergency rule and partially suspended the European Convention on Human Rights for three months. During that time, the president can rule by decree: He can ignore fundamental rights, such as the right to freedom of assembly and press freedoms, government authorities can impose curfews and media coverage can be outlawed.

    A 'Holiday of Democracy'

Erdogan has also announced his intention to "cleanse the state." He wants to have parliament vote on the reintroduction of the death penalty to provide him with the ultimate punishment as he goes after those involved in the coup and he has called on Turkish citizens to occupy streets and squares across the country.

They have listened. Mostly in the evenings, thousands of demonstrators gather in prominent places, such as Ankara's Kizilay Square or Taksim Square in Istanbul. The carry mock gallows and pay homage to their leader Erdogan: "Say the word, and we'll die. Say the word, and we'll kill." Men shoot blanks and speakers incite the mob. Erdogan's loyal prime minister, Binali Yildirim, has spoken of a "holiday of democracy."

The EU will do sod all about it. Oh I lie, they may have a meeting about this terrible situation, then have another meeting.........It's all they seem to do.

They have said this though about some 'threats'. Looks like Turkey really want to be a member of the EU still.

EU must not make threatening statements on Turkey’s accession: FM Çavuşoğlu

The EU must not make “threatening statements” on Turkey’s accession process, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has said, responding to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s suggestion that Ankara is “in no position to become a member any time soon.”

“EU officials must not make threatening statements on Turkey not joining the bloc. We won’t be discouraged by their threats,” Çavuşoğlu told private broadcaster Habertürk on July 25.

He added that the EU is free to express its opinion on the capital punishment debate that emerged after the July 15 failed coup attempt in Turkey, but this “will backfire if they make threatening statements.”
