Yep. That documentary is required viewing to understand Italian Crime Drama. Anti mafia judges are blown up in their cars by roadside bombs. So the chances of that surgeon surviving to give evidence in court are slim. The best outcome for IM is that the Don can't get his illegal transplant and dies.
The Killing is get massive promotion on BBC4(and quite rightly so). Has there been any trailing of it on BBC1 & 2? I haven't noticed any. It's nice to see them letting everyone know about the repeat on BBC4 but they are largely preaching to the converted. Are they spreading the word to a wider audience?

They started filming the TV series in 1999. Excursion to Tindari was first published in 2000. So I think the 2001 date for this TV production is correct.

What an odd programme. The crimes seemed to be the least important things in it and the director has clearly never heard of “show, not tell”. Bloody Christ this thing was wordy. The low quality humour was also misjudged and just sabotaged any attempt at taking the thing seriously. Clearly the Italains like their crime leavened with a large dollop of lite-farce as well but for me it just looked like some horrible Euro-throwback. Two hours was ludicrously overlong as well and I shudder to think what watching it with ads must feel like as it seemed to never end even without them!

I agree with all that. Surely there must be some decent Italian crime series that we could have, instead of this. Does the BBC think that as long as they give us something with subtitles we will be satisfied, no matter how bad it is?
After the excellent programmes we have had on BBC4 recently I was really looking forward to this but only lasted until halfway through, it was dreadful.

I think you have to forget TK, Wallander and Spiral and pretend that they never existed and then just enjoy Inspector Montalbano for what it is.
The Montalbano books are great and the TV films have, in my humble opinion, succeeded in bringing the books to the screen. The films and books are a lot lighter than the Wallander books and films. They reflect the light, sounds, culture and food of Scicily. This is not Ystad or Copenhagen or Paris, after all, it is Scicily. Inspector Montalbano is a great character - but yes, he does,sadly, also remind me of Ross Kemp. But that is not his fault. It is ours. He is great and I wish we could have all 22 + films on BBC4.

This is the first time I've seen this and it was quite engaging. l'll probably be watching more if they put them on.

Really enjoyed this. Have read the books too, so I knew what it was about before watching and felt the film matched the 'feel' of the book quite well. I think the fact that it had a slightly dated feel to it added to the atmosphere.

No it's not irrelevant. It's because there's a group of us who watch all the Euro subbed crime dramas on BBC4 and we post in various threads. It's kind of impossible not to compare/contrast dramas of the same subgenre in some way. An Italian crime drama will probably be rather different in tone to a Scandinavian one but it doesn't mean we can't say which we prefer. IMO this just wasn't as good as the other Euro crime dramas which have been on BBC4 recently.
I enjoyed this, loved Ingrid. Didn't get why he was with another woman at the end. I think its too easy to compare all these foreign dramas, I think its better not too and to enjoy each one separately. Don't normally get real porn thrown in either. Can't see a British drama showing that.
So there's one next week, I like the two hour format. Any chance of the BBC buying any more? Any reason to think they won't. With Zen gone, this might act as therapy for now, until another channel buy it.
I really enjoyed last night, shame they are not showing the other episode next week....really suprised the BBC hasnt taken the rest of the series, its got very good reviews and has been very popular elsewhere. You cannot judge a series by one episode/story. There I actually liked Zen as well and look how that was dumped by the BBC.
