Amy Adams and Ben Mackenzie in Junebug. I'd only ever seen them in teenage-orientated things before (Amy - Cruel Intentions 2 and 1 episode of Buffy; Benjamin in The OC) and was blown away by their performances.

I'd put Amy Adams again for Enchanted.
It might be a family comedy type film, but I thought she was very impressive in it and carried the film.

    Yep

    Amy Adams in Enchanted

She basically played an animated Disney princess.....but in live action.

    Amazing performance.

Vinny's girl friend in My Cousin Vinny, she should have got an Oscar for that. Kate Winslet in Titanic, and The Reader and Enigma and most others. Stanley Baker in many parts. I will also put in a word for James Woods, but the films are not great.

Claudia Cardinale. Because she is hot.

Marisa Tomei did win an oscar for my cousin vinny.

It was quite the scandal at the time if I recall

She was excellent in that, but she is an actress that is just consistently brilliant.

Di Caprio in his later films... Wolf of Wall Street was one purely immersing in the character but also in Shutter Island when he recalls the actions of his wife...and also his own actions in response...heart-breaking

I DETEST the comedy of Robin Williams but his dramatic performances never fail to impress me. Particularly The Fisher King and One Hour Photo. Heartbreaking stuff.

Russell Crowe as Bud White in LA Confidential. He was outstanding, I thought. That's the first one off the top of my head.

^^ Agreed even with all the talent around him in that film, he easily steals the show, his bets performance too imo.

My list (there's probably more, but these are the ones that came to mind):
    - Sam Rockwell – Moon, A Single Shot, so many cameo or co-starring roles too (he needs more lead roles imo)
    - Jake Gyllenhaal – Donnie Darko, Source Code, Prisoners and many more....
    - Tom Hardy – Locke, Warrior, Bronson, The Dark Knight Rises (best thing about the latter imo)
    - Joel Edgerton – Warrior
    - Michael Sheen – Frost/Nixon
    - Robert Redford & Dustin Hoffman – All The President’s Men
    - Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight (best thing about the film imo), Brokeback Mountain
    - Liam Neeson – Schindler’s List, The Grey
    - Javier Bardem – No Country For Old Men
    - Leonardo DiCaprio – The Basketball Diaries, Shutter Island
    - Cary Mulligan – Never Let Me Go (can’t begin to tell you how much I fancy her lol)
    - Kevin Spacey – American Beauty& The Usual Suspects
    - Anthony Perkins –Psycho
    - Daniel Brunl – Rush
    - Jennifer Lawerence – Winters Bone (she's a good actress, but has never topped this performance imo)
    - Edward Norton – American History X
    - Natalie Portman – Black Swan
    - Michael Clarke Duncan – The Green Mile
    - Tom Hanks – Captain Phillips, Cast Away, The Green Mile and many more.....
    - Mia Waskowska – Stoker (although she was amazing in In Treatment on TV)
    - Christopher Waltz – Inglorious Basterds & Django Unchained
    - Cillian Murphy – 28 Days Later, Batman Begins
    - Christopher Eccleston – Shallow Grave, 28 Days Later,
    - Ewan McGregor – Shallow Grave

    Thanks for pointing that out.

Mistakenly I had always thought that they we're quite good.

Well I won't be watching that again. :)
