I would imagine that ITV are contractually obliged to show games in the Champions League even if they don't involve English teams......it's hardly their fault that English team have been generally crap and been knocked out. If they don't show these games they are unlikely to be awarded the next contract
The Europa league is unlikely to cost a lot in terms of buying the contract and consequently guarantees a reasonable audience share at minimum cost
Suppose English teams do badly again. They'd be better off ditching the contract and spending the money on something else. It was always madness when ITV ditched the ITV Seven in the eighties.
For me there is. There's enough football on sport channels without putting it on one of the five major channels, which then has to knock regular things off. Then again, I suppose it's for the advertising revenue when millions upon millions of men and lads will be watching the football.
Millions of us have no interest in it, it's just not many of us are brave enough to admit to it. I for one will be skipping the Euros and going out with my partner to avoid it. When this starts, I think some of us should form an Anti European Championship thread.
For those who dont have sky the analogue or freeview channels will be showing football alot due to the Champions League nearing its end in May as well as the FA Cup and those competitions are televised to give people a choice. Those who have Sky have more choices to watch it or not.
I could say this for the amount of reality shows on the telly now, I think that is worse! at least football is a bit more exciting.

....but you can't go out already to avoid the odd mid-week game?

I've checked the fixtures to see when England are playing and apart from June 15th, which is a Friday and the night we normally go out, it should be OK. As England will probably get knocked out, best to avoid a pub that night.

So why can't you do the same with other games? It just seems odd for you to moan about something you could easily avoid doing.
Is (Are?) the Olympics going to be on one channel?
The Olympics will be on BBC 1 and BBC 3 and BBC 3 is having it's hours extended during the Olympics, so it will be on during the daytime as well as the evening and it has been reported in some of the newspapers that Eastenders will be broadcast on BBC 2 during the Olympics.
Ian.
ITV are the worst.
They have been covering European games and England games, they follow this with the news, then show highlights of the game they have just shown.
What is the point of that?
Would be nice if they spent the money on some decent drama instead of dross like the Europa League. I can see the point for the FA Cup and England, but not football tournaments mostly involving foreign teams most people have no interest in. Tonight was a case in point: two hours wasted on foreign football. Meanwhile they are reduced to showing stuff like The Biggest Loser to pay for this.
The football is profitable on its own. It doesn't need subsidising by other genres.
I am a fan of football but tend to pick and choose which games I watch these days. I also go to some local games and am involved with coaching. I can get a bit “footballed out” at times near the end of the season, but the Good Lord invented Rugby League for me to watch then!:D
I also go fishing and clay shooting, or failing that read a book or watch a film or go for a bike ride, or take the dog out. The weather’s been to good to stay indoors anyway at the moment!
There are some God awful games shown, but the broadcaster isn’t to know that. Many a time a showpiece game has been hyped to death and has turned out to be a stinker, but something you assume would be a dog of a game has been a 4-3 thriller! As folks say, it’s not like the old days when the same game would be on BBC and ITV and Russian Ballet on BBC 2

As it's only their second group match, it's quite unlikely (although not impossible) that England would be knocked out that night. But either way, for anyone who doesn't like football, pubs are probably best avoided when England are playing (June 11 and 19 as well, plus whatever matches they might play in the later rounds).

without question the most sensible post in this thread.
Barca v AC Milan might be more attractive game for some football fans to watch than a dull FA tie or Premiership match between 2 average sides which Sky show each week.
There is more to football than the English teams and England national side!
The OP didn't seem to note this was a Champions league tie..not Europa game which are tonight.
I don't mind watching the odd football match but if you don't like it don't watch it. There are loads of channels to choose from these days. Failing that you could surf the internet or listen to music or something.
I agree wit football fans, if you don't want to watch football, do something else, its easy, after all, during the Six nations when a real sport was on TV, football fans had to put up with that rather than their overpaid jessie heroes chasing each other for kisses after every goal.

Good job the OP doesn’t have to endure Scrum V on a Friday night innit! ;)

In a world where time-shifted viewing is denting ad revenues, sport watched live by an audience that is generally quite difficult to reach by advertisers generally makes for quite a good return on the rights for the TV company. Far from being subsidised by cuts to other programming, UCL football will actually be making profit for ITV.
I actually wish there was more Football on Tele. I know it isn't possible with all the "who's got the rights to show what" that's involved now a days but I only have free view so I don't get to see much Football.
Married, 20 years old and out of work. Been out of work for about 3 weeks now so hasn't really hit hoem yet but even when my wife and I were both working full time (now it is only she who is) we STILL couldn't afford Sky. Would be a waste though cos I would be buying it for the Sports channels and that only.

Match of the Day on a Saturday; a more regionalised Big Match on the Sunday and Sportsnight during the week.
Instead of having to chance whether the live game is any cop you had the best bits at your disposal.
Remember watching teams like Dundee Utd have a European run via the highlights shows, we don't get that these days.

I'm pretty sure someone will.

Sarcasm...

ITV have shown a cup replay, and a European game the last two nights.
Ian.
Except the highlights were of other games.

One on Channel 5 and ITV4.
Ooh ta - a fellow Radio Luxembourg fan too!
Good job the OP doesn’t have to endure Scrum V on a Friday night innit! ;)
There were FA Cup ties on ESPN and ITV and a Champions League match on Sky Sports.......
Sport on sport channels?!?! Whatever next?
