Ella Henderson is the "new Adele"...?
Why do I keep seeing this headline flashed everywhere? I get that it's all publicity of Ella, but it highlights an issue that is forever recurring the moment an up-and-coming artist gains success: they always have to be a replacement for someone else.
Someone is always the new Madonna or Mariah, and I just don't get it. Why do they have to be constantly linked to people that, in all honesty, bare no musical resemblance. Ella an Adele are nothing like each other...?

Heck, ADELE wasn't even 'the new Adele' until the second single off her second album 3 years after her debut. Media just likes buzz.
I've never seen this lassie interviewed either. In what ways is she like Adele? Adele smokes, swears, and is a big girl, and this lassie was on X Factor. They're just two female singers who've had success, there's no need to comapre one to the other or suggest one is going to replace the other. That doesn't help anyone.
Different music. Very different voices. Different ages.
The media love overehyping people. I do think Ghost could be a huge hit around the world though.
I don't remember that. I just remember everywhere screaming she was the next Mariah. That definitely didn't happen.
Here's just one example, it was in the papers too but can't be bothered looking now

Oh i do. US had her set out as the next Mariah/Whitney
I also recall Clive davis (who discovered whitney) was suppose to take her under his wing who would apparently get her to record a second album that would be even bigger, a hugely successful world tour and turn her into a hollywood movie actress with a Bodyguard type film role. But when Echo underperformed, he didn't want to know anymore. I do wonder if there is some truth to this. Clive is heavily rumoured at treating some of his artists like crap and dropping them at the first sign of them gaining any control or an underperformance of a single or album. Kelly clarkson will easily vouch for this. But Whitney was the apple of his eye and treated her like a princess regardless.
My my, I'm sure Jesse McCartney was rolling in royalties.
I remember this...then Kelly settled it with him and he told more lies about her in his book and Kelly spoke out about him again.
Ella seems to be doing really well at the moment, but I can't see her having huge success when she records her second album. I felt like when Leona took so long recording her third album, her gap in music was taken by Emeli Sande who has been hugely successful. So right now in music without Adele and Emeli Sande, Ella is filling that gap until they return
In fact, Adele didn't really hit the mark maybe because Duffy had overshadowed her when Rockferry was released.
Like StratusSphere put, Adele didn't really take off until Rolling In The Deep although the excessive use of Make You Feel My Love on X Factor throughout the 2010 series more than likely helped when Adele released her new single in 2011.
If Ella's second album contains some extraordinary songs then there's a chance Ella could be even more successful.
To be honest, I'm surprised the media haven't said Ella - the new Leona.
Because Leona isn't that famous anymore.
With Adele, if the media were correct in 2008, they had to compare her with Dusty Springfield at most but no they tried to pitched her with Amy and Duffy.
Adele did the best and said both are great and so does Ella.
They have different voices and their music is very different, so neither is better than each other.
For something to be better than one another, there needs to be similarities. Like how some people prefer pepsi over coke.
One thing they only have in common. They can both sing very well.
You do realise Leona is still releasing music almost 8 years into her career? The last single Leona released hit #1 on iTunes and went top 3 in the UK charts. Still getting paid work, signed to a major label, working with major producers and songwriters on her upcoming album? Yes, she may not have maintained the success she initially had but Leona is still in an incredible position considering how badly she's been managed, so I'm sure Ella would love a career where 8 years on she's still releasing music and making money.
Leona is in a completely different situation to Alexandra, who has been incredibly unlucky.
Leona on the other hadn has been lucky enough to have been snapped up immediately by an even better label, Universal's Island Record and has spent the last few months working with some great writers and producers on her fifth album. Plus she had a hit at the end of last year, which was supported across all major radio stations, she is in not to bad a position right now. I'm not saying she's gauranteed to come back strong, but I think she is in an OK place just now.
In America they just have waited to send the single to radio til now, it's coming strong on i-tunes, place 95.
That was tabloid rubbish.
Clive took a dislike to Leona when her management company suggested she start having a hand in writing her material. He suggested that Leona was a vocalist, should stay in that box and have little involvement in anything else. Leona went on to write the bulk of Echo's lyrics and became her own vocal producer. He washed his hands with her after that. I don't think Clive likes women that can stand up for themselves i.e., Kelly, Leona, J Hud.
As for the OP, she's been marketed as an Adele-Leona hybrid. Leona's vocals & Adele's artistry. I think we have these comparisons for new artists because it makes it easier for producers, radio pluggers, label executives, DJ's and the general public to digest everything.
I think it's ludicrous to suggest Ella won't be making music in a few years time either (to the post a few comments above mine), I don't expect to see her working in my local Tesco anytime soon. Popstars don't just disappear anymore like they did in the 90's.
