I blame computers - I knew how to spell at school, but as everything is corrected automatically nowadays, my spelling skills have definitely dropped off.

I can't remember the last time I wrote anything of importance by hand, and therefore without those red wiggly lines

I think computer spelling checkers cause more problems than they solve. This is because manual proof-reading picks up far more mistakes of spelling and grammar than any widely used computer system, which many people seem to rely on to the exclusion of proof-reading.

I've never used a computer spelling checker, I never will, and I learn from my mistakes. Ban them I say!

First thing people on here do when you disagree with them is attack your grammar or spelling, i think it just shows they're losing the debate if they need to resort to it. Sometimes I'll be bothered sometimes not, I'm not in a classroom and no one on here is teacher so they can gtf.

I am mortified when that happens to me. I will not resort to a slanging match but accept the correction with a smiley. I never have an excuse for a grammatical or spelling mistake on my part in fora, text or even facebook or twitter.

I always proof read before posting - missing some errors occasionally unfortunately.

There are so many people in the various DS fora that write "could of", "should of", and "would of" and they do that consistently.

Do they not know what the correct form is? Has no school teacher or employer ever corrected them? Very odd.

Are you sure that forums isn't the appropriate plural in modern usage?

They are both acceptable. I prefer to (usually) use "fora".

I suspect that rather than a deterioration in spelling and grammar there is simply just a lot more unedited self-publishing on the internet these days.

25 years ago letters went through the typing pool and there were two people to correct errors - the hand-writer / dictator and the typist.

People now write and self-publish immediately without a sub editor.

Furthermore those without good spelling and grammar skills would not have had access to publishing media such as this forum [or even "mediums" for those that don't like Latinate forms ;-) ]

Mistakes in grammar I can accept as grammar evolves like language.
Spelling evolves at a much slower rate and I do my best to get the spelling correct in evryfink wot I rite.

Why does it matter to people if others can't spell? As long as you can read what the person is saying, just let it go!

Read what the person is saying?

I've never used a spell checker. I know how to spell having been taught at school in the 50s and 60s.
