I hate the Modern/Metro UI on a normal laptop or desktop machine but Windows 8 is perfectly fine when running in desktop mode. I haven't used it on a touch screen yet so cannot comment on that.

I read somewhere that M$ will sell users a license for DOS 1.0 if they need it. Can't imagine what you'd want with an OS from 1981 though :D It would be like Apple still selling the original Macintosh in the Apple stores!

    Yeah, that's not true.

They wouldn't sell users a license for DOS 1.0? I saw it in another thread on here. Maybe I should try and get one for Windows 3.1 :p

Hate is too strong a word. I'm not a huge fan TBH. I have it on VM, but still use Windows 7 as my main OS.

Like most people, I hate the new Start screen/menu, but like other aspects of it. I have the excellent Start 8 & Modernmix & boot straight to desktop. If only Microsoft had these built in to Windows 8 as an option, I'm sure it would have been a success. Not everyone uses or plan to use a touch screen. "Everything at once" - I don't think so!

Not sure if or when I'll replace it from Windows 7. Windows 8.1 goes some way to improve things, but I'm still not convinced.

I think the poll needed a third option: "It's OK when tweaked" :D

Not hate for me when you do not use the phone tile part
Tile part is just messy and unfriendly, nobody uses that anyway do they?
Tile part apps were just rubbish and basic
Downloaded some Google store apps on the Desktop and they were brilliant

Just use the desktop happily now with classic start menu

I don't hate it, i just find it incredibly frustrating to get anything done.

I've had to Google pretty much everything, how to shut it down, how to get the run menu up etc etc.

I remember just after we got Windows 8 on our laptop I tried to apply for a job with it, copying and pasting chunks of my CV into text boxes in Forefox, without being able to open them both at the same due to them being full screen. I swear I was close to throwing the laptop out of the window in rage.

I still have no idea whether you can do simple stuff like that, I avoid the laptop like the plague and use the Windows 7 PC downstairs.

I think that speaks volumes about it's usability.

Do not hate it, but agree, once tweaked its fine.
The poll should have a 'Like it when tweaked' option.

MS really did a bad job of promoting W8, many just seem to think its all Metro or are not really understanding what it is.
You only have to walk pass the many laptops in the shops with Metro on the screen and the reaction from the many who have no idea where the desktop or start menu (that they want) is.
I am forever having people asking me, how do I get my desktop back and not have to use Metro.
The damage I am afraid is done now and the poor takeup of W8 phone has not helped either.
Windows 8.1 may satisfy a few, but the majority do want only a desktop
Roll on Windows 9, Metro free!

This what they SHOULD do :
Everyone who bought a Windows 8 laptop and hate it should be able to get Windows 7 put on their laptop for free.
Those who love Windows 8 can get on with it.
Or better still, people should have had the choice in the first place, with an option to change back to Windows 7 if they don't like Windows 8

If the poll asked "Do you hate Windows 8 in it's original form (untweaked)?" I would have definitely voted "yes". I have not voted as I'm happily using it now and it is so much faster than my XP machine, and I enjoy playing Snook! downloaded from the store.

Most of the third-party utilities do that, or very nearly so - and some of those utilities are free of charge.

There's no need to go back to Windows 7. Just install a start menu replacement and run Windows 8 permanently in desktop mode where there are a few minor improvements to in the interface over Windows 7.

And where do you draw the line with getting older software

I prefer XP to Vista and 7, should I still be able to get this

I like OS X 10.6 on DVD, should Apple start allowing this and include DVD drives

The lack of Start Menu is a fair criticism (which can be overcome), but many of the other comments about 8 are as though people have spent 5 seconds looking at it and decided that Metro is all there is to it

I might be in the minority here, but do people not doing a little bit of research on something before buying/using it

Why didn't MS allow people buying new computers the option of Windows 7
Where do you get that from? Argos
Also you can by a pc with no OS and put one on yourself.

I know this is a position that MS can't really win with, but it really shouldn't need a tutorial to do really basic things, like shutting the PC down, or the interface needs to be inuitive enough that you can figure it out on the fly. Which it really isn't.

I could probably get used to it, if I really wanted to, but I don't. I have Windows 7 on my desktop, which shits all over Windows 8 in terms of mouse+keyboard usage and I have an iPad, which is miles ahead for using your fingers with.
Windows 8 half heartedly tries at both, and fails.

This just feels like progression for the sake of progression, rather than adding utility and value to the OS, at least for a desktop user.

Suffering because Microsoft is trying to shoehorn desktop and mobile users into one way of working, to try and steal some of Apple's tablet / iPhone marketshare.

My old (Windows 7) laptop died and I needed to get a new one.
For reasons I can't be bothered to go into, I had to get it from CurrysPCWorld.
They only have Windows 8 laptops.
If I had had the choice, I would have got a Windows 7 laptop

No I got that from Currys/PC World and John Lewis. They only had Windows 8 laptops and desktops. In fact someone in John Lewis said that you can't get Windows 7 any more. According to him it's Windows 8 or Windows 8 unless you want to buy a Mac. I see companies like pcspecialist and Misco do W7 machines.

How do you think people learned how to shutdown their PC when Windows 95 was introduced as a replacement for 3.1 (or 3.11)? Want to turn it off, just click Start - very intuitive... :D
The Start menu wasn't really working anymore, the startscreen might not be the perfect replacement, but it is a good start.
At least Windows is open enough for you to be able to install software to mimic the old versions - if it was an Apple product it would be a case of this is how it works now full stop.

    Yes
Some of the newer ones run offline too
Microsoft should have made it like that for their apps instead of all the tile part
