Yes! When you are behind the speakers you can't hear yourself and so the earpiece 'foldback' the vocals to your ear.
Bands in the 60s, 70s, 80s (and even today) use monitor speakers. The wedge shaped small speaker on stage facing the singer.
There wouldn't be much point these days singing without earpieces. The ALW singing shows all started using earpieces after the girls in the first one couldn't hear the music over the studio noise.The recent interview with the strictly singers had them saying they still couldn't hear the music sometimes over the audience clapping and shouting. The judges on Fame Academy by some reports could never hear the singing over the studio noise and often marked what they ahd heard in the rehearsal.
