They are probably encoded with xvid. Not usually a problem, but xvid is open source so anyone can compile their own version and many people do, or tweak an existing one.

The PS3 is a DivX Certified device. DivX supports decoding of xvid, however there are some things that xvid does/can do that is not allowed by DivX. If an avi is encoded with xvid and uses options in the encoding process that are not supported, DivX will not decode the file.

DivX on the PS3 is far more strict than any of the versions available on PC.

    My PS3 plays PS2 games.

You must be getting some rare type of encoded AVI files as erm *cough* Certain American TV shows *cough* I've "obtained" all play fine on the PS3.

The only files my ps3 wont play are certain Quicktime profiles , i've never had any problems with divx/xvid.
How is your usb key formated......FAT32 / NTFS.
ps3 wont recognise anything on a usb key formatted to the latter.

If you can connect your ps3 to your pc (Wired or wifi) i would say take a look at ps3 MediaServer
    http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/

    Really good software and free.

I've never had a problem with them. AVI is only a container, they're not all the same.
