I adore that you put Barnaby. Barnaby is number one, for me. I absolutely love Midsomer Murders. His name is D.C.I Tom Barnaby, in case you didn't know. ;) The new one is D.C.I John Barnaby (who I think is doing a fantastic job in the role).

I am obliged to say that there have been some really lightweight characters mentioned.

    Characters from 'Friends'...really????:o

I have chosen British only and even though I like soaps, I have ignored them.

    In no particular order :-

    Gene Hunt
    Morse
    Lovejoy
    Poirot
    Jane Tennyson

You have some need complain when you've chosen Lovejoy and Poirot.

Have you seen Homicide: Life on the Street? That's where the character of Munch was first seen, and it was a terrific show :)

    J R Ewing
Blackadder (as characterised from series 2 onwards, the only sane person in a mad world)
    Dana Scully
    Hyacinth Bucket
    Patsy

My reason is that I stuck with the shows because of this one character, and would again.
I could add more than one character from the shows below though, which actually puts them ahead in my book:
    Fawlty Towers
    Red Dwarf
    Star Trek
    Allo Allo
    OFAH
    Yes (Prime) Minister

Finally there's a name I want to mention "out of competition", not because of the character but the actor's incredible performance:
Bob Peck as Ronald Craven in Edge of Darkness

Honourable mentions: Penny (Miranda's mother in Miranda, Becky McDonald (Coronation Street), Annie Sawyer (Being Human), Donna Noble (Doctor Who)
