I adore that you put Barnaby. Barnaby is number one, for me. I absolutely love Midsomer Murders. His name is D.C.I Tom Barnaby, in case you didn't know. The new one is D.C.I John Barnaby (who I think is doing a fantastic job in the role).
Impossible to choose just five, for example I can't differentiate between Kirk and Spock,or Cagney And Lacey. Ask me on another day and I'll come up with a completely different five, but for now....
Number Six (The Prisoner)
John Munch (Law And Order franchise)
The Doctor
J R Ewing
Basil Fawlty
How about some villains?
Servalan (Blake's 7)
The Master (Dr Who)
Kao Chiu (The Water Margin - Japanese 1973 series)
Joan Ferguson (The Freak) (PCBH)
Margaret Thatcher

Have you seen Homicide: Life on the Street? That's where the character of Munch was first seen, and it was a terrific show
J R Ewing
Blackadder (as characterised from series 2 onwards, the only sane person in a mad world)
Dana Scully
Hyacinth Bucket
Patsy
My reason is that I stuck with the shows because of this one character, and would again.
I could add more than one character from the shows below though, which actually puts them ahead in my book:
Fawlty Towers
Red Dwarf
Star Trek
Allo Allo
OFAH
Yes (Prime) Minister
Finally there's a name I want to mention "out of competition", not because of the character but the actor's incredible performance:
Bob Peck as Ronald Craven in Edge of Darkness
