I think all shows on Radio 2 should be live. Pre recording to me is lazy if they can't do their own show I would rather a stand in to do it live

In principle, that sounds fine... But then what about the documentary shows or specialist series? And concerts / archive material? Many of the once a week specialist hosts would simply not be able to commit to live shows all the time, or they'd never be able to pursue their own careers (eg Jamie Cullum). Is it true that Brian Matthews comes in and records 2 or 3 shows at a time? in which case, would you happily axe him?

I do agree, though, that for listener, entertainment oriented shows, that they should be, and actually mostly are live. Still, I'd rather have a ore-record than some voice tracked effort.

Sometimes the best way to do a show is to pre-record it.

And of course there are instances when live shows have pre-recorded bits (Steve Wright, again).

    But yes, I'd rather a pre-record than voice-tracked.

I don't have a problem with either live or pre rec. Apart from mainstresm shows it makes no difference. What they should do however is decide which is which and stick to it.

E.g If they want interaction on a show like potp then it should always be live and if Blackburn is off a stand in should do it.

If it can be pre recorded or live then it should have nolive interaction so that the listener can't tell the difference. To have Tony saying "you can't text this week because i'm recorded" is just daft. That show isnot so specialist that it can't be covered.

It does make a difference. I get fed up of hearing all the joins on Elaine Paige where she has obviously gone wrong and they have done an edit.If it really must be recorded it should be recorded as live.
I have no problem with the evening specialist shows being recorded. I'm not so keen on the 2 hour shows like Matthew, Paige and Walker being recorded.

Sunday afternoons should always be LIVE. You can tell when Johnnie Walker is a Pre Rec as he dosn't give the email or text number and the news reader introduces the travel reporter. I Paul O Grady I think is rarely LIVE. I'm not sure about Micheal Ball but I think ites Pre Recorded but Clare Teal at 9 seems like its LIVE

I agree, would love to see Simon Bates do some weekend Radio 2 cover, his versatility allows him to cover most shows and what would be better than as an ex voice of The Top 40 to cover Pick Of The Pops?

I think if we ran that one past Tony he may never go on holiday again. Fair to say though that the two are great believers in live broadcasting. I think Saturday and Sunday mornings should be totally live, not so bothered about weekend afternoons.

Agreed why does Steve Wright get 6 shows a week, Simon should get Sunday 9-11am. He could do a Golden Hour and then an Hour of Love Songs and include Our Tune as part of that hour.

Plus he could do it Live so have more interaction.

Is Sunday breakfast live? I've never heard the show myself, but curiosity attacks the mind.

Some presenters are suited much better to specialist shows with no interaction, i.e. American Ana Atonic-Matronic, for reading out Tweets may interfere and distract from the show's subject. Isn't it also more cost-efficient for pre-recording; I assume this from the recent deportation of Alex Lester. In my opinion, 'radio is one of the most intimate forms of communication' (I think I stole that from an ad.), thus live shows are always immensely more appreciated.

That is a very good idea to freshen up the 9-11am slot on a Sunday, and I'm not sure if you can remember but Simon Bates has actually presented Pick of the Pops before back in 1991 I am sure it was for three weeks while the great Alan Fluff Freeman was off or on leave.

Alan was actually off for four weeks altogether as he had the flu before that so another broadcasting legend the late Tommy Vance sat in for him and a great job he made of it as well. Anyway I'm sure it was 1991 but it might have been 1992.

Give Sounds of the 60's to someone who can do it LIVE. Surely Brian Matthew can't do it for much longer surely

It is when Madeley is on as he reviews the papers, not sure about TW.

I'd be amazed if SOTS remains in its Saturday breakfast slot once Brian retires.

I have a feeling (and only a feeling - no evidence) it will be combined with 70's on a Sunday afternoon.

A sensible move if it happened. 'Johnnie Walker at 60s and 70s'

It would make sense. I reckon at some point, probably as part of money saving, they'll move to a 7-10, 10-1, 1-4, 4-7 weekend line-up, the majority of them all live.

You see this is what I don't like. Make the show live or make it pre recorded but not live sometimes. If you want it so that it can be either or then don't have any topical content like paper reviews etc because it stands out a mile when the show is a pre rec.

If there's a show that should go out live it's SOTS. It needs interaction with the listeners texting or emailing in with stories of going to gigs or meeting pop stars of the day, records they were buying at the time etc. We did get some of that when JW covered when BM was ill, who, by the way, is sounding very old and frail now and not really a very pleasant listen.
