Out of love with gaming...would bother with next gen...should I give up gaming?

I am out of love with my 360. I play with the same people, some of whom are always just talking or messing on youtube and never want to put any effort into a game. I'm thinking mAybe I should get myself a new console. I'm tempted by the PS4 so I can break ties with people I play with but then I may as well just give up gaming. Gaming for me is a social thing but recently I have not been on it as much and when I do go one and chat to people I used to enjoy playing with I wish I hadn't bothered. Am I at a stage in my life where I'm too old for gaming? And has this happened to anyone else? Should I be thinking of giving my xbox to the kids?

Seems to me that you just actually need to start playing games. From what you have said you just use it to talk to people because they don't want to play anything.

I am the complete opposite to you though, I don't see gaming as a social thing - i do enjoy the occasional multiplayer session but I am predominantly a single player gamer.

I do play games but predominantly multiplayer...I don't mind single player but I don't enjoy them much.

Being too old for gaming is not something I believe. You possibly need to take a short break and maybe look for a new group to play with.

personally i hit a patch last year where i totally fell out of love with gaming,my 360 or PS3 didn't get touched for weeks and weeks but eventually i found a few games that slowly rekindled my love for gaming, and ive subsequently jumped into the next gen,im also an older gamer but as far as im concerned there is no upper age limit to gaming

Your'e never too old to game. Sometimes we go through patches were we just lose interest. It happened to me, I lost interest in both my consoles and I didn't game for around 6 months. Even tho I had a huge backlog of games to play, I just wasn't interested. I needed something different so I bought a PC and that rekindled it for me. I'm glad I did buy a PC because I have made some very good friends via Steam :)

Sounds like the group you play with might be the problem. Do you think you would be enjoying yourself more if the group you played with played properly and took the game seriously?

Mainly it will depend on the game as much as the console.

I can certainly sympathise with anyone feeling a bit of gaming apathy at the moment. There just isn't that big bringing everyone together game right now. Plus this is the time of year when I find that gaming apathy sets in - the weather is getting better and releases are a bit thin on the ground.

When I initially got my One, I was playing Forza 5 all the time with others who had made the jump from the 360 - but setting up party chat was such a pain after the ease of doing it on the 360, that we started to not bother. It's got better, but people were burned and seem reluctant to set up a party now.

Once again, initially Ghosts was fun, but as more and more people got fed up with it, the multiplaying with friends rather than randoms has dried up.

I tried to like Titanfall, but there was just something about it that meant I couldn't "click" with it.

Back on the 360 GTA V was enormous fun for awhile, but the fact you kept getting dumped back in with randoms after the end of missions and Rockstars failure to add the promised "heists" meant that people eventually drifted away.

Mainly I'm playing World of Tanks - again it's with randoms, because no one on my friends list plays it, but I don't mind so much because its something I can have fun playing.

Which i guess is the lesson here - if you can find a game that interests you, you might find yourself getting drawn back to gaming.

Interesting post and really made me think.

I love games as much as I ever had; only wish I had more time to play, but modern life gets in the way.

Perhaps the group/s you previously socialised with have changed and you haven't or vice versa. It happens all the time in relationships.

For me I find it strange you list gaming as a social thing, sure I love playing multi player and right now I'm on a social forum, but I still see modern gaming as a more solitary activity. Thinking back to my SNES days and they were the social times for me as you were right next to whoever you were playing. Perhaps the disconnect is that we are online, but miles away from our players/friends, etc.

I'll admit there are times where it's much more satisfying to pull a fast one on your friend than AI, or work collaboratively to complete a goal. In an FPS, When in a squad I'll always work for the team benefit too, but I still always love a good campaign mode and see it as a primary factor in a game purchase.

Perhaps you just need something new to re-spark your interest.

my problem with being out of love with gaming is the insistance that everything has to be multiplayer, my internet connection at home is crap and will always be crap because of the place i live in, I want decent stand alone single player campaigns that last more that a few hours(not an hour or two like a Medal of Honour game i played recently). Last game i had that i liked was Far Cry 3.

    'Gaming' is pretty broad.

You don't usually hear people say, I'm out of love with movies, or music, or tv.

Switch genres, switch consoles (or to PC), try MMOs, etc. Steam sales help :D

As for too old..... I've been gaming for 30 years. Nearly as long as computer games were a thing. Not stopping any time soon :)

I agree, I hate the tacked on multiplayers - even Far Cry 3 had one. Luckily it didn't affect the quality of the Single Player mode unlike some...

Playing COD Ghost campaign nearly killed my love of gaming :D

I think if your losing your love for gaming then maybe going next gen wouldn't be the best move, limited games been the main reason, I notice you have a PC OP, that's probably a good half way house, massive selection of games, old and new, maybe you could try some games you've never considered before. I actually think PC could be the answer in the short term, then consider a PS4 in another 12 months? See how it goes. :)

It can't be that bad! I don't understand all the COD backlash in recent years.

I was exaggerating somewhat but I honestly didn't like the single player campaign one little bit. I'm going to try and get in to the multiplayer, I'm not very good tho and easily get frustrated at dying every few seconds

I buy the COD games for the single player - I find the stories can be a bit convoluted, but there is a real sense of depth and drama to them.

I'm by no means the most skilful player out there, but I tend to try and play FPS single player modes on the hardest setting, hoping that this sets me up well for the carnage that is multiplayer. Doesn't always work though as you'll always start with duff loadouts and have no knowledge of the maps.

My high horse keeps needing me to mess about with it to get a game working properly due to lazy coding by some developers!!!
