    Wednesday 5th June - talkSPORT

Mark Saggers presenting Lions Live from London alongside Brian Moore

Rugby Union: British & Irish Lions tour match
Western Force v British & Irish Lions - Andrew McKenna, Richard Hibbard and Michael Lynagh (10.30am BST commentary), with Mike Bovill reporting/producing

What a coup for talkSPORT to get Richard Hibbard, the Lions' starting hooker in the first match of the tour, into the commentary box for game number two. Apparently he is late addition and was only confirmed as part of their team this morning. Their coverage has been pretty impressive so far and this move only further demonstrates their credibility.

Brian Moore is actually posting in the talkSPORT Chat thread on here, where he's said that he (and presumably Mark Saggers as well) will be travelling out to Australia for the first test match onwards.

Thursday 6th June - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

5 Live Baseball with Mike Carlson and Josh Chetwynd

    Baseball: American League
Tampa Bay Rays @ Detroit Tigers - Dan Dickerson and Jim Price (commentary provided by Talk Radio 1270AM WXYT - "The Detroit Tigers Radio Network")

5LSE joined this game during the top of the second inning, with coverage starting at 6.30pm BST after the conclusion of commentary on the opening game of the ICC Champions Trophy between India and Sri Lanka. They'll be no baseball next Thursday due to the day-night ODI between England and Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy, with the next live match-up scheduled to be the White Sox @ Twins game from 6pm our time on Thursday 20th June.

And to correct my post from yesterday, the Western Force v British & Irish Lions game actually kicked off at 11am BST - I was caught out by this as the rest of the non-Test tour games will be kicking off at 10.30am our time.

National Basketball Association Playoffs, ESPN Radio (USA)

    Eastern Conference Finals
Miami Heat v Indiana Pacers - Kevin Calabro and Hubie Brown

    Western Conference Finals
Memphis Grizzlies v San Antonio Spurs - Dave Pasch and Chris Mullin

    NBA Finals
Miami Heat v San Antonio Spurs - Mike Tirico and Hubie Brown, with Marc Stein as sideline reporter

Marc Kestecher has presented the bulk of the NBA Playoffs on ESPN Radio broadcasts, with Kevin Winter and John Brickley (who have covered for Kesty as the host of ESPN Radio's MLB coverage during the playoffs) sitting in for him on the occasions when he has been commentating on games from the first two rounds of playoffs.

Unlike their coverage of the Major League Baseball postseason, where they provide live coverage on every game of the playoffs, ESPN Radio only broadcast commentary on the whole of the Conference Finals and NBA Finals. During the First Round and Conference Semi-Finals, ESPN Radio broadcast selected games - each week they have one on Sunday afternoon (one of the televised Sunday Showcase matches on ABC) and one on Saturday either before or after their MLB Game of the Week, plus a good number of midweek matches including most Game 7 series deciders. During these rounds they have used Calabro, Pasch, Kestecher and I think Dave Flemming (radio voice of the San Francisco Giants MLB team) as commentators with Brown, Mullin, Dr. Jack Ramsay, Will Perdue and Jim Spanarkel as co-commentators.

ESPN Radio's coverage of the NBA Playoffs has been tinged with a lot of sadness as after calling Game 7 of the Chicago Bulls v Brooklyn Nets First Round series, Dr. Jack Ramsay - one of the NBA's legendary coaches and the lead co-commentator for ESPN Radio over the past decade - announced he needed to undergo immediate medical treatment and would have to miss the rest of the playoffs. Ramsay is a cancer survivor who turned 88 this year.

It had been planned that Ramsay would be involved in ESPN Radio's coverage for the duration of the playoffs, were it not for his illness he would be commentating on the NBA Finals with Tirico and Brown and I believe he would also have called the Eastern Conference Finals with Calabro, as Brown was originally scheduled to co-commentate on the Western Conference Finals for ESPN television.

Earlier in the year, Ramsay had announced he was planning to retire from broadcasting at the end of the season after the death of his long-time ESPN Radio partner and close friend Jim Durham at the start of it, so it is sad that he will have to bow out in these circumstances. Personally speaking, I have only started listening to ESPN Radio's NBA coverage this season and I found Ramsay a real joy to listen to - incredibly wise but still very enthusiastic about the modern NBA, the absolute antithesis of the stereotypical stuck-in-the-past older pundit. It was heartening to hear an older person being such a revered analyst on perhaps the ultimate young man's sport, the respect and affection he commanded from the players and coaches he interviewed always shone through. He'll definitely be missed and hearing him call the Finals would certainly have enhanced my enjoyment of it. But the most important thing is that he's in good health and I wish him well in his recovery.

Saturday 8th June - BBC Radio Wales

Rick O'Shea presented Radio Wales Sport alongside Adrian Hadley

    Rugby Union: First Test Match
Japan v Wales - Nick Webb (6am BST commentary)

I had expected to hear Adrian Hadley chipping into the commentary from Cardiff, but going by the bits I dipped into Nick Webb was flying solo.

Hopefully Ian will be able to give us the BBC Radio Cymru details for both of today's Wales and Lions games later on, I wasn't able to catch them but I do know that along with the main television commentary, Radio Cymru was an audio option on the BBC Red Button coverage of the First Test.

    Saturday 8th June - talkSPORT

Mark Saggers presenting Lions Live from London alongside Brian Moore

Rugby Union: British & Irish Lions tour match
Queensland Reds v British & Irish Lions - Andrew McKenna and Michael Lynagh (10.40am BST commentary), with Mike Bovill reporting/producing

Cricket: ICC Champions Trophy Group A
England v Australia - Jack Bannister

It sounds like it'll be a two man commentary team for talkSPORT this morning. I wonder if they were hoping to land a non-playing Lion as they did on Tuesday but haven't been able to do so today. Speaking of which, I wonder if BBC Radio Cymru will try to get one of the Welsh speakers in the squad (Jamie Roberts, George North) to join Gareth Charles in the box for them when possible?

Sean Holley (who was doing punditry for BBC One Wales on the Japan v Wales international earlier) and Shane Williams have both tweeted that they'll be heading out to Australia to join up with the talkSPORT team in a week.

Thanks for the information Ian. As I said in my post earlier today I had wondered if BBC Radio Cymru would try and "do a talkSPORT" by getting a Welsh speaking Lion on co-commentary duty, with today being a good opportunity as Jamie Roberts wasn't in the matchday squad. It seems only fair that Radio Cymru got to call upon him after talkSPORT were able to call upon Richard Hibbard on Tuesday.

Anyone know who RTE Radio have used as their co-commentators with Michael Corcoran and Donal Lenihan on their coverage so far? I think they were planning to take a similar approach to that of talkSPORT by using different summarisers on every match, albeit their press release stated they'd be Australian voices I reckon they'd be tempted to call upon a non-playing Irish Lion if they could.

I think we might have heard the last of Sir Ian McGeechan on talkSPORT's live coverage of the Lions tour (if not as a guest on their preview shows and other programmes). After going out to Hong Kong to do co-commentary on the Barbarians game for them last weekend, he's covered the last two games for Sky Sports from London and it looks as if he might be a regular on their live coverage. I guess Shane Williams and Sean Holley might join Andrew McKenna and Michael Lynagh for commentary on next week's final two warm-up games, with it then being Brian Moore and David Campese joining Macca for commentary on the three Test matches.

Don't know his name but one of the TMS commentators on today's Champions Trophy match stumbled over his words and eventually said "**** vs South Africa". Hope the Daily Wail didn't hear!

EDIT: Blimey, it's even censored. Wasn't expecting that. The word was the 'offensive' shortening of 'Pakistanis'.

The BBC's Wimbledon press pack is out today and reveals that John Inverdale will be presenting the 12-4 portion of the 5 Live coverage this year which is excellent news. Shelagh Fogarty will then takeover for the rest of the day as she did last year.

The commentary/reporting team which looks like the usual line up with a couple of points of interest. Philip Studd returns after working for Radio Wimbledon last year and Ed Smith is included in the line up, be interesting to see what his role is.

BBC Merseyside opt out for Rugby League on Fridays and now Mondays, when a local team is involved, so your statement isn't correct. Evening cuts have actually benefited rugby league on that station. Before then coverage has been condemned to medium wave and later Digital since mid 90s but now weeknight games are on FM as well with the option to split frequencies.
Same on Radio Manchester on a Friday and Monday but RL Extra now on 6-7 but RL on BBC Radio Manchester has suffered with the cuts with the exception of Wigan with no coverage of Championship or Championship 1 much of Manchester's RL namely Salford and Warrington games is pretty much confined to online though why can't Wigan commentary be on FM with Salford and Warrington on DAB

    Tuesday 11th June - talkSPORT

Mark Saggers presenting Lions Live from London alongside Brian Moore

Rugby Union: British & Irish Lions tour match
Combined New South Wales-Queensland Country XV v British & Irish Lions - Andrew McKenna, Ben Youngs and John Taylor (10.30am BST commentary), with Mike Bovill reporting/producing

Another non-playing Lion is joining the talkSPORT commentary team today in Leicester Tigers and England scrum-half Ben Youngs, the Lions' only try scorer in the Queensland Reds match. His involvement was first confirmed by Mike Bovill on Kick Off last night. He'll be joined by John Taylor, a Lions player from 1971 who was talkSPORT's lead commentator at the 2001 and 2005 tours, with this being his first involvement in the station's live coverage.

Saturday 15th June - BBC Radio Wales

Rick O'Shea presented Radio Wales Sport alongside Adrian Hadley

    Rugby Union: Second Test Match
Japan v Wales - Nick Webb and Ryan Bevington (6am BST commentary), with Adrian Hadley providing occasional bits of analysis from the studio

Ospreys and Wales prop Ryan Bevington wasn't in the matchday squad this morning so he joined the Radio Wales team as a special guest co-commentator. I thought he did really well, he analysed the game with detail and was complimented by the team for being able to see the backs' perspective as well as that of the forwards. Having sportspeople who are not in the matchday squad joining radio stations for live commentaries, this could catch on...

In the half-time sports news bulletin with Steve James (the usual Saturday Radio Wales Sport host), we heard a preview of the New South Wales Waratahs v British & Irish Lions match from Gareth Charles plus reports on the Wales Senior Open golf from James Pontin and on yesterday's play in the Kent v Glamorgan match in cricket's County Championship Division Two from Edward Bevan. In the half hour before kick-off, there was an interview with Lions lock Alun Wyn Jones that was conducted by Ian Robertson (BBC Radio 5 Live's reporter in Australia).

Queen's Club, London - Dave Luddy

    Golf: US Open
Merion Golf Club, Pennsylvania - Bob Bubka (who'll be co-hosting a US Open Special with Rupert Bell on Sunday night between 10pm-midnight)

Leinster and Ireland flanker Sean O'Brien, one of the try scorers for the Lions in the Combined Country match, is to be talkSPORT's special guest co-commentator for this morning's match, the third Lions squad member they have been able to secure for a live game. O'Brien will have only been confirmed as part of talkSPORT's team this morning (our time), as on last night's Lions Preview show Mike Bovill mentioned that they'd be a then-yet-to-be-confirmed member of the Lions squad joining Macca and John Taylor in the commentary box. It'll be interesting to see if this arrangement continues into the Test matches against Australia.
