Would a locked phone work abroad?

My family are travelling to India and want to take our phones with us and use India PAYG sim cards. However our phones are locked to Orange and T-mobile (UK)... Would they work out in india?

You could try a Rebel Sim adaptor and put the indian PAYG card into it and then the adapter into the phone.

THanks guys, I think Iv'e got one of those adaptors lying around so I'll take it with me and give it a try.
