Lets identify nusicance phone calls

This is a simple idea: Lets generate a list of all those phone numbers from these nuisance phone calls we all seem to get despite being registered with TPS. Hopefully if we get enough volume the authorities, i.e Ofcom, the Police etc will prosecute these scum and close them down.

First number:

02088701001

A small breath into a hurricane, I fear. Easy enough for the nuisances to get new numbers.

Would be a great idea if there wasn't already a massive website with thousands of numbers on.

Exactly! Some people just type before they think or even research!

Wouldn't mind, but the subject of whocallsme is repeated many times on DS over the last few years!

Better still would be if Ofcom and the authorities in general use the contents of Whocalledme to prosecute and shut these folk down.

Also why aren't the operators doing more to protect their customers. For example commerical organisations should not be able to hide behind "number withheld".

A lot of them are foreign companies. Ofcom has no jurisdiction.

The cynical would say it's because the telcos make money from these calls. Telcos would argue that it's not up to them to screen calls before you get them. Plenty of people would be appalled at the idea of BT only allowing people it approved of to call you.

The problem with some of the simple call blocking devices is they work on blocking all withheld number calls etc, unfortunately that isn't clever enough as for example my doctors surgery calls on a withheld number and they need to call you if you want an appointment etc.

The things about "whocallsme" is that it works in identifying the nuisance callers with caller id, it wouldn't be that difficult to request from BT, TalkTalk or whoever to block all numbers that appear on that list.

My view is this whole subject isn't being taken seriously enough by the Telco's because as you said they are making money from it.

As for Ofcom having no jurisdiction over foreign companies, yes this is true, but they could apply pressure via the ITU on those countries that are the source of these calls, as I'm certain this isn't just a U.K. problem

Only thing we get is people from overseas posing as UK companies.

The last one we got was from "UK Today", which sounded like they were basedin India...

I like to see how long I can keep them talking for, or ask them to hold the line for a sec, put it down and walk off. Waste as much of their money/time as possible.

The best way to stop nuisance calls is to make them hang up first. When they start blathering away, move the phone from your ear and gently put it on the table. Return to the phone 10 or 15 minutes later and they'll be long gone, they will have assumed you were listening to everything they said and weren't rising to it, they would at some point had to have decided they were getting nowhere and hung up on you. You have then beaten them because they were forced to put the phone down first. You will never hear from them again.

    This is good news http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-21855594
although the fine should have been a lot larger. 10 times this amount would really send the message out that cold calling is unwanted by everyone
