How does he operate the laptop with the screen at that angle? Also, what's the deal with the massive deaf aid? He looks like a plain clothes police officer.

Your description is of That's Oxford - although things seem a little better in the past week or so.

We now have an EPG - but is is not the current schedule.

The audio is still distorting at times and the pre-recorded edits and joins are very poor.

Most of the adverts look like they've been downloaded off YouTube. The jarring jump cuts in the news programme intro combined with the woeful attention to audio levels made me turn off.

Almost total lack of information regarding what's on and when (including the lack of EPG) is really bad. But then again, it appears indicative of the way That's run their stations.... utterly p*ss poor.

I thought that's Manchester was doing test broadcasts and the live bits were the auditions, like the X-Factor without the singing, and with less talent.

Real EPG data is now in place for That's Manchester - previously was a repeating 3(?) hour block with an under test/coming soon message.

Is it real, or is it just any old crap to satisfy the licence conditions? Much like the rest of their content. I'm looking forward to the 18 hours of new content every day that they've got to produce. It alone is the cornerstone of the original licence award. If Ofcom allowed them to vary that, I can see the likes of Made suing their arses off.

For Channel M's former detractors, once you actually witness local TV, you realise it wasn't all that bad. I certainly don't see these guys winning any RTS awards any time soon.

    Hi Greebo

Could you provide us with a typical 24 hour schedule - say 6am tomorrow (Thu) to 6am Fri.

    Cheers

No probs, by the wonders of mediainfo, here's a chunk of the current data from the transport stream - add an hour for BST times of course:

So that's Manchester's TV and news presenter is from Sheffield?
I know the channel has only soft launched but after the last license holder failed to launch this is very disappointing.
Today some news was on repeat about every 10mins with lip sync out and loud unnecessary special effects.
Channel M was much better even when it had a lack of funding, if only local TV was modelled of them.

I enjoyed the breakfast programme and evening news with Andy Crane on Channel M but they couldn't make it pay so it died. TV is very expensive even at this level, if it only gets a community radio level audience it will not last.

I enjoyed the breakfast programme and evening news with Andy Crane on Channel M but they couldn't make it pay so it died. TV is very expensive even at this level, if it only gets a community radio level audience it will not last.
I think local TV can work, just in big cities and not the way Jeremy Hunt set it up. The way That's Manchester are running things it barely seems worth running, especially as the licence fee is partly funding it.

The problem with Manchester is that a good proportion of people still remember Channel M, so there's already a yardstick by which it's going to be measured. I appreciate there were channels in Oxford and Southhampton, but they closed quite a long time ago and neither really operated at the level Channel M did, certainly from a funding and turnover point of view.

Does anybody else think they're managing their 18-odd hours of first run content every day?

I think you are pretty much spot on with regards to Channel M. I'm pretty young to have watched Channel M much, but I certainly remember it being better than this.

They don't appear to be managing 18hrs of first run content but I could be wrong. A lot of times I have turned over to adverts or the ident just fixed continually on screen.
They seem to have two studios, the news desk and a room with a sofa and table with three glasses of water which never appear to move:) At least the amount of reading a script of a piece of A4 paper has reduced, and they are now using worn microphones instead of waving a hand mic about in the studio.

I posted this on TV Forum and I will re-post it here:

The thing about Channel M is that they had the huge advantage of both a local and national newspaper on their side. Once The Scott Trust sold off all their non-core assets to Mirror Group, in order to protect The Guardian, they lost all that. It could have been different if Mirror Group had wanted to buy Channel M, but as they didn't, when everything went through, Channel M lost it's news-gathering operation overnight.

Channel M was poor at first, originally launching as Manchester Student Television with content from the University of Salford, CHUM (of Canada), Euronews etc. Much the same as at the end, with archive in-house productions, but no new live shows. I recall also a nature show and a talk show from the University of Salford. At the very end, it was a relay of Real Radio Northwest with Euronews and some other small bits from the Community Channel.

That's Manchester is dire, and I was really hoping for better. Given enough time (and money), there's a chance it will get better. They could do worse than getting partnerships with the M.E.N., local magazines and websites (I Love Manchester, SalfordOnline and so on), in order to gain access to their content. Also, syndicate content with other local stations as necessary.

The channel effectively ceased in 2010. GMG just kept the pilot light on until 2012.

Exactly. I think they were hoping for a pathway from the Government regarding local television. However, even running just their own radio station and Euronews costs money and so they decided enough was enough. I do miss Channel M though. At it's peak it was a cracking station.

The Carlisle licence has today been confirmed by Ofcom as having been awarded to That's TV and will operate as That's Carlisle. The formal date of the licence award was 2 June so has until 1 June 2017 to launch.

The confirmation document is hardly a ringing endorsement of the business plan etc but there were no other bidders:-

    Hope coverage is good .
No need however to put the broadcast antenna high up the mast in a much more mega expensive location , coverage should be good with a broadcast antenna at a very moderate height , say about as high as a bankers integrity .
Cost a round of drinks in the commons bar for the broadcast antenna .

Another licence for 'The UK's largest local TV group'. Unfortunately, Manchester aside, their portfolio appears seems to largely consist of the licences nobody else wanted.

At least they can share programmes between their stations. I'm sure the viewers in Carlisle will love the 'Views of Manchester' set to the finest library music available.

Teleshopping is in the That's Oxford EPG but I've never checked it out.

I don't think you can criticise local TV channels for showing teleshopping. Even ITV does it!

Not all local TV channels are on air 24/7 - Notts TV has Teleshopping in the morning too (along with Peregrine Falcons live) - the core content is during evening primetime when people are more likly to be able to watch. (Although they are due to have Sam and Amy doing something at breakfast soon).
