Sadly, Bob Hoskins died last year, so I don't think he's working any more.

Looking through the list of people who have been suggested, there are some very fine actors among them - but some very ordinary ones as well. There is no accounting for taste.

Dicaprio and Matthew M are the two best and most versatile actors of our generation. Head and soldiers above the rest with superb charisma and presence.

McConaughey has really come into his own the past several years. Whomever was his agent at the beginning of his career should be run out of Hollywood.

Jake Gyllenhall is probably the stand out actor currently

Leonardo Di Caprio was the first name that popped in to my head when I saw the thread title. It helps that he's been in a lot of very good films, but he's still a top notch actor in my book. The Departed and Wolf of Wall Street are his best in my opinion.

Sam Rockwell - I've only seen him in a few films, but he is full of charisma and sells it every time.

I think Christian Bale is overrated. He was brilliant in American Psycho, but is very wooden in the Batman movies and Terminator Salvation.

I've never really figured out Brad Pitt. He definitely has the ability to be top drawer, but he's too inconsistent in my book.

Jake Gyllenhall is impressive, and I agree that he keeps getting better - he was excellent in Nightcrawler - I don't think that movie would have been half as good if it wasn't for him.

Bryan Cranston - I haven't seen him in any good films, but his TV work is excellent, and that is probably more impressive these days. To be the main man in a show the size of Breaking Bad, making the premise believable and portraying Walt as a hopeless victim, hated psychopath, and everything in between is a perfect example of his range.

That's true. From generic rom-com guy to Rust "start asking the right f****** questions" Cohle. Completely different actor.

Granted I haven't seen every film he's done recently but Ethan Hawke is becoming one of my favourite actors at the moment.

Agree with many who say Tom Hardy esp Locke, what a fantastic film and performance. :)

I think he has given the best performance of any actor I have seen in a TV show. I only started watching Breaking Bad when it started on Spike a couple of months ago and he has been consistently brilliant throughout. Aaron Paul is also top notch.
Last night's episode when Walt was on the phone to his son from his hiding place
    nearly had me in tears.

    Roll on the finale tonight.

And when she's not too busy taking selfies, Jennifer Lawrence.

Actually, thinking about it, there are many very talented actors and actresses around at the moment. I practically agree with most of the posts on here.

For me, I think at the top of the list (best 4) today (it'll probably be different tomorrow :D):

    Cate Blanchett
    Natalie Portman
    Lena Headey
    Famke Janssen

    Leonardo DiCaprio
    Jake Gyllenhall
    Michael Fassbender
    Tom Cruise
