Tonight Derek arrives by his little brother, Max's, side, released after a 10 year stretch in prison. Derek is the oldest of the Branning brothers and was last seen giving Carol grief at her wedding in 1996.
Max finds his family in meltdown. Tanya is refusing her treatment for cancer, Cora & Rainie have moved in, Lauren is sleeping around and Abi has turned to shoplifting. "Look at the state of you, you've let yourself go, haven't you?" he sneers at Tan.
Jo Joyner and Jake Wood both put in excellent performances as Tanya tries to conceal the truth while Derek scares the pants off Fat Pat and sister, Carol.
Tonight we find out that her cancer isn't the only secret that Tanya has been hiding....

Lauren knocks some sense into her mother..

When Lauren returns home following her visit to the hospital, she demands to know why her mother has been lying to her, but a desperate Tanya slaps her - not wanting the truth to be revealed in front of everyone. Tanya then pushes Max out of the house.

Suddenly, Lauren makes the shock decision to tell the rest of the family what's really going on - Tanya has cancer and is refusing to have treatment. Stunned, everyone is keen for Tanya to explain herself. Tanya says that she didn't want her family to go through what she went through when her father was ill. Cora can't understand this as she doesn't believe he suffered much, but she receives a shock when Tanya reveals the truth.

After Phil's latest stunt, the feud between the Mitchells and the Brannings steps up a gear.
Jack retaliates by preventing Roxy from seeing Amy, and Derek makes it clear to Phil that if he is going to cause trouble with his brother, he is going to be starting trouble with him too.
Meanwhile, Pat and the family worry about their financial situation and Ricky realises he needs to admit the truth to Bianca.

he normally writes the xmas day episodes though which include most of the cast, he wrote Archie's murder and the live ep. which heavily featured the Mitchells

Delighted to see Tyler doesn't feature at all next week - could he have a more pressing engagement at court?

I will ask my friends on ED thread to remind me at 7.30 to switch over to EE and record second half of ED. At least then I can ff the ads.

Downton had always had an x factor lead in and never aired without being on after the XF . Enders can stand on its own 2feet and will be on after Strictly and Dr who which will nodoubt clash with Itv soaps and beat them like past years. for many Enders is tradition and its best to record downton and fastforward ads as its a 2hour show. EastEnders will beat it im sure

yeah I watch Downton but watching it xmas day doesn't appeal to me, hopefully they air it 18th December/Boxing Day
this time last year they had Benidorm down for xmas day but it ended up on Boxing Day
