Lower back and hip pain when standing

About 6 weeks ago I got a sudden onset of pain in my bladder/lower back and hips. I'm in my late twenties (male).

Since then, with the help of private medical cover, I've in total had two ultrasounds (kidneys and bladder, also groin) as well as an MRI for lower spine and pelvis. Also been tested for urine infections.

Basically, absolutely no cause was found. I'm currently on holiday and expected being largely sedentary to improve things but the pain is worse. Before I'd feel nothing much when lying or standing, yet it was very uncomfortable standing up. I'd get pain and a dragging feeling in both my hips which would often be felt in the groin and lower back.

I am hoping when I get back, with gentle cardio and going to my normal routine it will improve slightly.

Latest stage is after everything else I was referred to a pain specialist, he arranged the MRI, and for now has just given me painkillers for a month. If they don't work It sounds like he wants to try different painkillers but to me that's just covering up the problem.

Never had anything like this before and it's now affecting my daily life. The prescribed painkillers are doing nothing. Anyone had something similar? Usual response would be go to your GP but ive done all that, nothing found and the current solution isn't helping at all!

That area is where my Arthritis condition first showed itself. Although I was younger than you when I first got symptoms. Have they ruled out your joint's? As when I was X-rayed they saw the abnormalities around the pelvic area.

What I have is this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankylosing_spondylitis.

Have you ever had any back pain or stiffness in your neck as you have been growing up?

Sorry, but as no one on this forum can carry out a physical check of you, any advice could be totally wrong and worsen your condition. Go back to your doctor and ask for a referral to the Ortho clinic.

I wish DS would ban any advise requests regarding health - advice given could be so, so dangerous. No one knows if the person giving advice is remotely qualified.

Sore backs and hips can be caused by many things - arthritis, hernias, broken backs, displaced hips, a bullet anywhere in your nervous system, obesity, morning sickness, kidney infection, a 2 foot spear sticking in your gullet.................

Yes, I would also advise going back to the GP for a consultation in respect of this medical issue.

Your post does raise a valid wider point though. Similar symptoms can arise from many different underlying causes so it's always best to see a pharmacist/GP/dentist depending upon the condition concerned or go to an NHS Walk-in Centre or an A&E unit it things are urgent and critical. I do think it's acceptable though for people to ask if anyone else has been given the same types medications and what the effects were for them because that's just a comparison of experiences matter.

If I had relied on the medical profession my daughter's condition would likely remain undiagnosed - because four different medics were sure that she did not have it. Thank gawd for the internet I say (which informed us as to the specialty that we needed to insist she be seen by).

Anyway, sturgeon, I can't pass by without just asking if you are a flexible person? Someone who might consider themselves 'double jointed'? Are your fingers bendy, have you ever found yoga positions easy, do you sprain your ankle easily perhaps? Your condition sounds a bit like something that pregnant women can get - when hormones make them extra stretchy.

Obviously you can't be pregnant but you could be extra stretchy for other reasons. If this sounds like you then Google 'Hypermobility'. If you think it applies to you then you need to see a Rheumatologist.

Whatever you do keep going back to your GP until you get help. Things like Hypermobility do not show up on scans, just because the scans are clear doesn't mean that your pain isn't very real.

    All the best.
