Not entirely sure but that period (late 90s?) is also my favourite REM period.
It's between a few.
E-bow the letter
Strange currencies
At my most beautiful
Daysleeper
Tongue
Then there's a whole load of songs that I like a lot, just a little less than those above. Most of Monster comes into this category, and the two or three albums after that, along with songs like Nightswimming and The Great Beyond. I think Monster is definitely my favourite album of theirs.
And there's a few of their bigger hits that I don't like as I find them either too repetitive and bland (Everybody Hurts) or a bit poppy and boring (Shiny Happy People) but a lot of that is probably to do with over-exposure. I'm not wild about Losing My Religion these days either for the same reason. When I was about 16 we had a jukebox at school in the common room and I used to hear that song every single day so it's an annoyance now.
An excellent band anyway. Ach - I'll go with E-bow the letter. The opening bars give me shivers and remind me of where I was at the time. I also liked that I never really knew the lyrics so had to transpose my own onto it in my head. Aluminium tastes like fear. Adrenaline pulls us near.
Losing My Religion
Country Feedback (there are great live versions licking around)
Belong
My favourite REM thing might just be this though - from 1990 when Glasgow was the City of Culture, Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant did a cover of Hello in There with Billy Bragg:
I love REM even though I think Michael Stipe is the most tedious right-on bore in the world, thankfully he can sing unlike that other tedious right-on bore Billy Bragg.
what's the frequency kenneth (listed to MONSTER a lot)

Will have to try to get their latest couple of albums haven't got them yet (I know they are a few years old ) .....The above are my standouts really incredible songs, been a fan for many years.

Talking of 10,000 Maniacs, I love that the guy in the video for Nightswimming is staying in room 119, a nod to the 10,000 Maniacs song Verdi Cries.
If you think Nightswimming is gorgeous, and don't know Verdi Cries, it is just stunning:
