Actually what you are describing is a form of musical curation - acquiring and selecting the good works and distributing them to a wider audience - Erik Hermansen the producer said something along these lines at a conference a couple of years ago. DJs, streaming services, music threads are all part of this curation process.

As for radio, I listen to radio stations that have DJs who don't interrupt the music but still licence and select it. One solution might be be to change radio stations or at least the presenters and producers rather than switch them off.

some of my fellow dj's who used similar practices referred to what we did as education and entertainment. the primary aim of a dj is to entertain, that's why people come to clubs, to be entertained and dance, but in addition to this, instead of being like most of the boring shitty dj's in other clubs, we would educate the audience by introducing stuff they've maybe never heard before, by playing original versions of tracks that were currently or due to be covered or sampled, by giving people what they need as well as what they want. so introducing new things whilst at the same time playing stuff they knew and liked. in a real club scenario it was perhaps a bit easier as if you are playing dance music, people are dancing to the beat and the rhythm and often don't know half the tracks that are being played, perhaps most of the crowd wouldn't know most of the music. just a few of the geeky ones, the ones who usually wouldn't dance, would know most of the tunes. but you can take the same idea and implement it elsewhere, after a big tune play something new or obscure or different. that's how you make a name for yourself and get a reputation. you may lose some punters, but the ones who like what you like will talk about it and bring other people the next time, and you work your way towards gaining an audience that appreciate what you play, and you are free to play what you want to play instead of playing the same old shit over and over. if you are having fun playing the music you want to play and your audience appreciate it, then you have the best nights

it doesn't matter if you are a dj or not. turning off the radio and keeping it off is the best thing you can do if you are a music lover. as for being a dj, do you want to play music people will love or just play the same old crap as everyone else, as if it's the latter you don't need to listen to radio as you can just copy lists. however you aren't going to get far as a dj if you just play the same stuff as everyone else. introducing people to new music they like will get you much further. but of course some dj's are simply doing a job in a crappy bar or club playing chart based music to drunk people. those dj's wont go very far and don't need to do much apart from play what appears in chart lists and play requests. in both cases it just depends on if you are a music lover and/or dj that wants to play good music, or someone that just wants to follow the same old shit as everyone else and perpetuate that shit going around. sometimes i play to people who want to hear chart and popular stuff but i don't need to listen to the radio to tell me whats popular or in the charts

    What a snobby pompous comment.

I would honestly love to see the crowd you DJ to each week compared to mine since you are 'educating the masses' and it is so clearly working for you. Which I doubt. You're probably a bedroom DJ with no clue as to what people want to hear. Boring.

The point above about playing a crowd original versions of covered songs or samples is also a bit thick. Clearly you aren't the only dj's that do this. Also, the point to this thread was to say well who are you getting the first nod from that someone else has covered it. If it's not until it gets on digital spy then forget it. It's too late. It should be on radio long before then.

I don't think radio 1are too bad, I agree all the ageism stuff is stupid and wrong, but regarding the dance music they play, they clearly are going to play more commercialised dance. I find it funny that people that love underground dance/club music hate it when their style of songs get played on the radio, they want to feel exclusive for not listening to what the people that listen to the radio listen to and yet they also constantly criticise the music that's played on the radio by saying its crap for the masses and that the radio never plays anything decent. I've seen people claim to like a song before it got big then when it's been played on the radio and everyone else is playing and listening to it, they make out they don't like it.

what's snobby or pompous about it? I play to cool people in cool venues. not snobs, and not pompous people

wrong. very wrong. and I've played in Europe and the other side of the atlantic. it works for me, and my audiences love it

of course not, and I've not said or suggested anything otherwise

I don't usually discover new artists or tracks from this website. furthermore I posted to help you out with constructive points. whilst you say you'd love to see my crowd, I certainly wouldn't like to see your's or experience your sets. maybe one day you will be lucky to see mine though. who knows you might dance to what I play some time over the summer

some dj's actually care about the music they play and want to play good music and entertain people with good music instead of rehasing the same old shit. if you are happy doing what you do and your punters like it, stick to it. no one is forcing you to change. in some ways what I do works better as a result of dj's that repeat the same old crap
