Why do people not "push the boat out" when buying a car?

I am in my mid 20's and drive a recognisable high powered luxury saloon car. It is ten years old and cost me £5000 to buy it. And yet when I go somwhere eg. petrol station, pub car park, I seem to be the envy of everyone else.

This is a common situtation that I see often: Joe Bloggs has a car worth £3000 and he wants to part ex it for a brand new Citroen at say £16000. He has the money in cash so pays the dealer £13000 plus his car and drives off in the new Citroen. Fair enough. But why?

Why not get a second hand Merc, Jag, Audi etc for say £10000 and have the prestidge and presence of such a vehicle. Plus you'd have £6000 left over for fuel, tax, reapairs etc.

Thats pretty much what I did. People surley want the best that their money will buy. But no one gives an admiring glance or a second look to a new Citroen. What do other people think about this?

no one cares about what you drive as they are too busy living their own lives. as you get older this becomes more clear.

if you are lucky you are OK

if you get an unlucky buy, you may find you get some very large repair bills

personally, I would rather have a lower mileage newer car, even if the badge isnt so hot.

Possibly they buy what they want not what you think they should have.

I have a 7 year old Mitsubishi Shogun bought new for
£35K , I have a personalised plate so you can't tell how old it is, what would you think of me driving this.

What a d*ckhead, that old scrote should be driving a Morris Minor, could have saved himself a fortune.

Because unless you've got a really expensive car nobody cares.

Most people have little or no interest in cars. I'd rather have a new Ford than a second hand Merc.

Its the same as people who prefer to spend extra money on buying a designer label instead of high street.

Some people get some weird sense of superiority because they spent a lot more money on something that does exactly the same thing

I am a fan also of 4X4's, you unlike me would have had no problems in the recent weather. I would have a 4X4 too if I could afford to run two vehicles, but my insurance costs are still high.

The smell of new car, the licence plate, they are the first name on the registration document, the car is more modern and if going to be cheaper to run than a several year old car, they don't have space for a Jag...

Having said that the best car to buy is one year old as any teething troubles will be sorted and you'll be paying around £10000 for a £16000 car leaving £6000 for running costs etc etc

I can assure you, you are not the envy of everyone. Nor anyone for that matter.

Most people when they buy a car buy a simple machine that drives them from A to B. It doesn't need to be pointlessly high powered either.

    I couldn't agree more...

as long as a car is reliable getting me from A to B, safely.... why the hell would I be bothered about whether its a Mercedees, jag, ford, etc...

Im also perfectly happy with cheap clothes, Id never walk around with a tshirt with a big "versarche" or "prada" (or whatever) logo... I'd just feel like a right cock...

I knew a chap who always had Mercs or BMWs, he even had a Rolls Royce once, he spent all his time cleaning and polishing them, he rarely drove them, only short distances, he wouldn't take his wife shopping because she might put the shopping in the boot, and he rarely allowed passengers in case they dirtied the car. To me a car is a tool and has to earn it's money, that's why I prefer hatchbacks because you can carry plenty of stuff.

Because the kind of boat you are advocating has a financial hole below the waterline?

But I get alot of second looks. And several petrol station attendants ask me "is that yout car, wow." I guess I enjoy the attention. Although sometimes I wonder whether people look or ask because I'm young, maybe some think it's my dads car.

But Joe Bloggs buys his Citroen, as soon as he drives off the court it loses money. Within one year it's only worth half of it's original value. If he bought a second hand Merc say a 2004 E class for £10000 it has already lost it's money and won't lose much more as quickly. Plus I will say again, he will have £6000 left over.

I bought my car new almost 15 years ago and I still have it, the best of both worlds. :D

I like the OP's attitude though, common sense.

how about going to a restaurant

    steak or a burger?

they both contain the same type of meat, and do the same job, but he will have £6 left over

Thank you. I'm only advocating people having more fun. They spend less on the second hand Jag, Merc and have the enjoyment of driving such a car. It's a double positive in my opinion.

Its all about what you like to some people a car is just a tool they probably have an intrest in other things your not bothered about,

but to other people like me a car can be so much more than just a tool its something which I enjoy I apreciate the engineering and the design and the little quirky touches. I enjoy keeping them clean and well presented. I enjoy going for a drive.

I like to buy older cars to I like the idea that someone else has paid for all the depreciation, obviously buying newer you will hopefully get a warranty, but there is also lots of specialists that look after older higher end cars which can make the costs rather comparable

at the end of the day its just what you like and dont like

OP, I note you posted this in the "Single Guys: What Annoys you most about your dateless life?" thread
This is an interesting topic. I am in my mid 20's and have always been single. I have never been on a date or had any sexual interaction with a girl.

The things that annoy me have already been mentioned in this thread. Things like people saying "you'll find someone one day." and "wait till your married and your wife is telling you what to do."

I often think I am like Sherlock Holmes (not in the skills he had) but in the way he never bothered with women.

Despite being single I enjoy life, have a good job and good hobbies. Plus as a bonus most of the money I earn I spend on myself. (If I posted that last sentence on a couples forum I'd likely be torn to shreds).

I'm not having a go at the way you choose to live your life or the choices you make. If youre happy then great :) However I think it may help others to get a better idea of why you would ask such a question as the youve asked in this thread.

By the same token I think you are being a bit short sighted if you dont appreciate the reason most people dont push the boat out when buying their car is because, just as youve made youre choices in life, they have choosen to share their lifes with people they love and therefore have different priorities.

You aren't comparing like with like!

If he bought a Citroen the same age as the Merc, he'd have a lot more money left over. Not to mention the differences in fuel costs, road tax and insurance, and repair bills.

I get loads of second looks at my car. I normally carry my Alsation dog in a cage at the rear, he's a handsome boy and is often admired:):)

I like to look and listen to Jags, BMWs, Mercs, Astons etc, but i have no desire whatsoever to drive one.

I just love Clio's and it's all i've ever wanted to drive - and all i have ever driven.

I also enjoy the benefits of cheaper insurance and fuel consumption.

Am i allowed that answer? :D
