Does anyone else get asked this? "you want some half priced chocolate" there stacked up on the counter and no one ever buys them. Oh and they give you free book vouchers even though you dont want them. Is it the same everywhere else? cos here in Kent they seem hell bent on selling all this chocolate

 someone actually shops in WHripoffsmiths:D

I personally find they're far too expensive. I only buy newspapers from there, nothing that they can set the price for themselves.

    I know, I'm a miser:rolleyes:

    Same here.

They charge about £1.50 for a 500ml bottle of juice at the branches near me.

They charge £1 quid for a single can of diet coke as well.

I still want to go and buy one at that price just for the hell of it though :)

It sounds like WHSmith are just another shop to adopt the 'forced sales' technique at the checkout. The Post Office recently introduced this (you go to buy a stamp and get offered life insurance or something!) and clothes shops always do it.

    Gargh.

I walked into Next and had a look around the mens bit and a bloke came up to me and said can I interest you in this mens aftershave its only blah blah price. No thanks Im just browsing, he persisted to try and sell me more guff I didnt want so I said to him you know what? I'll have all of it. So he went over to the counter, went out the back to get some bags and while he was doing that I walked off out the store. Im not going back there again. Its like your mum catching you watching porn! a barrage of questions and they wont leave you the frig alone until you give them an answer

Last time I was in WH Smith there were sales people trying to get people to swap energy suppliers. Had to do the old fake mobile phone call thing so I could slip past them hassle free. And what the hell is up with the lighting? I thought I had suddenly developed cataracts. :D

I miss Woolworths :( I do agree about Smiths - but the worst one is BHS. Everytime I go in there they try and sell me their credit card services. It's like a ruddy mantra.

Yep. The energy salesmen that have infected apparently all the shops and supermarkets - M&S take note - I DON'T LIKE IT!

Sainsburys have jumped on the same bandwagon.

Argos finally seem to have taken the hint regarding their product insurance thing and also their credit card. I've not been asked in there for ages - thank heavens for their self-serve tills!

BHS are dreadful though. Even when you say no, they still carry on. I'm not as a rule rude to them, they're just following orders afterall, but it really is a challenge sometimes, especially when I'm trying to pay, and stop my 3 year old wrecking the shop at the same time.

They still are in shops called Home Bargains around here, Diet Coke or Pepsi, 4 for a £1. :)

If you time it right, you can pick up some pretty good bargins there, I recently bought a whole bunch of Pilot V5 Gel pens for just a little over a pound each, most retailers sell them at around the £2.50 mark :)

The worst IMO for trying to sell you their card everytime you purchase an item is Debenhams. I don't want one of their rip off store cards.

I get it all the time in WH Smiths.
I'm tempted to say "If I wanted chocolate, I'd have fcuking asked for it".

I also get it at BP garages, namely "any tea, coffee, hot snacks?". Erm, no, you're a garage, I come here for petrol, not food. How am I supposed to drink or hold a coffee whilst driving? And I'm not going to eat any food after handling your disgusting petrol pumps.

People only go in my local one to get to the Post Office at the back of the store. Surely WH Smiths's days are numbered?

However expensive WH Smith might be or however much they might annoy you by trying to sell you half price chocolate at the checkout, I will always have a soft spot for WH Smiths for being able throughout the years (since as young as I can remember) to read all the magazines and newspapers in their shops. For that reason alone, they will always be one of favourite high street retailers.

If I get offered store credit, I just say 'Im blacklisted'. Sometimes 'No thanks' simply doesn't work.

The chocolate thing winds me up too. Plus, you can barely see the lady on the till as she is surrounded by piles of half price sweets and books. Trying to give her your purchases while trying to avoid knocking them over is like a round from the Krypton Factor.

I did buy a bar of Galaxy once though as i was peckish, and it was almost at its use by date and tasted a little strange. It also had some white on the chocolate, a sure sign its old or been left to melt / re-harden. Never again.
