Ipod Charge

Ive had my Ipod Mini for 7 Months now and its worked OK since. today my ipod battery went to half so i decided to charge it as i need it to last all day tomorrow. its been charging for 6 Hours non stop and the battery is all ready half full. does this normally happen?, surely my ipod battery wouldn't need replacing. i havent even had it a year yet
