It wouldn't come up if the term didn't have "man" in the name I guess. The phrase does sound a little dated next to "murder two" but I'm glad the distinction betwen pre-meditated killing and the other kind is preserved in this country.

Which in turn comes from the way the Latin word "manus". while retaining its original meaning of 'hand', also came to mean a 'worker', and thence to mean 'a person' generally. So the "man" in manage, manhole, manufacture, etc., simply means any person, regardless of sex.
