As many as the person wants.

1 set of everything, anything more is just frivolous.

    As many as you want.

My personal "rule" except for special items is that if I haven't worn it in the last 6 months then I take it to a charity shop, or throw it away if it isn't good enough.

Three pairs of skiddies: Wearing one pair; one pair in the wash; one pair airing.

You mean you don't turn them inside out and wear them the next day too? :p;-)

    Too many.
I just gave loads of clothes and shoes and bags away but could and should streamline down again.

lots. except for socks, try to limit yourself to maybe 30-40 pairs or you end up with sacks of odd socks.

I went through a phase of buying a couple packs of socks each week, turned me into a lazy slob. instead of washing them, i kept putting on new pairs. by the time it did come to wash them, literally an entire machine load just on socks. ended up with lots of odd socks, kept them aside ready for the pairs to turn up, but ended up adding more and more oddies. anyway, i have cut down to about 70 pairs of socks now but still way too much, it takes 2 much space.

I buy a week's worth of new socks every year all the same design which neatly avoids the odd sock problem.

I do similar for my daughter, she has 12 pairs of white, knee-high socks. I occasionally buy another set of 5 pairs and chuck the odd sock away, but who cares cause they are all the same :D

You still get to choose a new design and pattern every year. Makes it easy to spot last year's which you hang on to as backups and any socks older than that which are ready for the rag bag.

I have around 14 different changes of clothes and underwear + socks, I do not need more I just replace stuff that gets worn out over time.

    4 full sets:
Three for everyday - 1 on, 1 off (clean), 1 in the wash
    And one for 'best' :D

    Seriously though:
These days I have a lot less than I did when I was working.
Apart from a couple of suits, and some 'specialist' stuff (thermals, camping, cycling, etc)
I have enough casual 'everyday' clothing to last me a little over 2 weeks, and I work my way through them until I'm down to 3 or 4 days' worth - Then we do our washing in a big batch once a fortnight.
(Wife does the same, though she has a much bigger range to choose from)
And just replace things as and when they wear out, or if I particularly like something I see.

**I have absolutely no interest in fashion whatsoever - for me, clothing is all about comfort.

I have too many clothes. Some of them haven't been worn for ages and ages, so time to get rid of a load I think.

It makes me wonder how big the Queen's wardrobe is as she only seems to wear an outfit once (at least I've never read anywhere of her wearing something again) :o

I rarely buy a dress, I get skirts/trousers and tops so I can mix and match.

According to my sister's Daily Mail - I just thought I should make that clear :D - on average, women only wear an article of clothing seven times before throwing it away.

If it's in my wardrobe it doesn't get worn very often. I tend to wear whatever is on the clothes horse or in the 'can't be arsed to iron' pile or is on the 'waiting to go upstairs pile' on the stairs. Going upstairs to rifle through the wardrobe just seems like too much hassle unless it's a special occasion.
Everyone in the house seems to adopt the same system, when I wasn't feeling well recently I didn't do much washing and my son had a mini panic when getting ready for school "mum there's no socks and pants on the stairs!', he never even thought to have a look in his drawers upstairs!
