I never call anyone "mate" and I insist on companies addressing me as Mr Mebabe. We're not friends. I cannot bear overfamiliarity.

Where I'm from only travellers referred to you as "mush*, and that was a long time ago. Is it coming back again?

Chav or Chavvy seems to be more popular these days.

Only heard that one being used in a similar way to Mate by older Kentish men.
Chav, Chavvy means kids, well it used to before being knackered into a catchall term over the last few years.

This isn't going well for the OP, is it?

Yeah. It also reminds me that a guy I went to school with got known as "Mushy" for unknown reasons.

I think males use "mate" because they want to come across as macho.

You think it's macho when blokes call each other mate? I think somebody's been slipping estrogen into your herbal tea.

In some places, yeah. Was used a lot more recently than that round here though.

FM's well known for their trolling nonsense, don't know why they've bothered on this subject though.
I've gone back to re-using Matey, was all the go back in the 80's, I'm on a one man London revival tip :)

I know it's such an underused word in the rest of the UK.

I think guys are lucky that they get to be called 'mate' by strangers. I hate being called love, darling, babe...

I call people 'mate and 'pal' all the time. And people return it. Nobody I've ever come across has had a problem with it.

People call each other "lad" or "pal" round here. You'll get called "lad" even if you're in your sixties or a short haired lesbian. "Awreet lad!"

Pal is also used, but not in that aggressive "You want some then pal!" pre-fight tone. Friendly like.

Better than being called a ****** or an arsehole surely??

Would you rather the take-away deliverer said 'here you go ******, enjoy your meal arsehole'??

Mountain out of a molehill stuff tbh
