Japanese TV and the picture-in-picture

Not sure really where I should post/ask this, thought here was good as any.

I was wondering if anyone knows why quite a lot of Japanese TV news type programmes seem to have the little picture-in-picture of someone in the studio during reports. I guess its probably a cultural thing, and they like showing the reactions of studio guests, but I wondered what it was all about.

It is used mostly on entertainment and tarento type shows on the commercial channels rather than news or NHK shows. These shows tend to have group of regular guests and as you say the small picture usually focuses on one of the gallery looking amazed, confused or saying something witty! Most of these guests are known just for appearing on these shows.

As to why, I have never got a clear answer:confused:, maybe it a way of showing a close up as some of these shows do have a large gallery of guests or main action/studio reaction type thing.

    Thanks. :)

I guess then its just one of those things that they do and was probably started years ago and just has become tradition.
