I've always said that people who say things like that have never been to a musical either professional or AmDram. There are people who go to school just to perform musical theatre. Marcus didn't sound particularly great last night or tonight so how he could do 8 shows a week and be able to make an audience suspend their disbelief is beyond me.
He should get a team of writers to put together a neo-soul type album for him, not a pop one. His pop stuff is cheesy; his more soul stuff is much more credible.
You do have a valid point - although of late there seems to be a trend where getting a 'name' to help sell the show is more important than getting the best performer for the role. I saw Chicago a while back and Gaby Roslin was in it!
Marcus has demonstrated that he can sing and dance to an 'ok'ish' level, I guess the question is from the show's point of view is whether he would be enough of a draw to warrant the compromise in quality of the performer..
Whilst I find Barlow a highly dislikeable person, I don't think what he said to Marcus was not said with the best intentions..
If anything gets in the way, it will be Barlow's career. Love him or hate him, there is no denying he is a huge star and huge stars tend to very busy at the best of times. That could be a problem in terms of accessibility for Marcus.
No offense to him but he was bland, boring and uninteresting. He may be a good singer but his voice never touched me. I got bored of him very quickly. He's nice and all but he just repeated the same clap trap about ''werkin' really 'ard'' every time he was questioned.
Thats enough about Barlows solo career, what about Marcus.
I hope he get's something. He looked really sad when he was performing the winners single. They also played the video from his audition saying that he wants to be able to shop at M&S, rather than walk past. I think he has had a hard life, I feel sorry for him.
Which is what they wanted, it's a load of boo shine. Last year he was in that X Factor band Eton Road, you don't get to that level (being in a boyband at all) and are so broke you can't shop at M&S (which isn't even very expensive anyway)
What a lot of old rot is being talked in this thread. Winning would have been the kiss of death for Marcus.
SyCo will be fine for Little Mix, who are the kind of manufactured pop that they excel at and which they have failed in forcing people like Joe to be.
Marcus’ will now be able to get a contract and will have time to work up some new material and without being messed with by SyCo. And he was only about 5% behind Little Mix in the voting, so he clearly has as much support as they do.
I think a lot of the nonsense being talked about here is pure venom of the sort that some of the more childish posters on DS seem to delight in. I mean grow up people.
Gary isn't obligated to set Marcus up, but he's a nice guy and true to his word, so if he says he's going to set him up then that's precisely what he'll do. Gary deserves way more credit than he's getting on this show.
I'd like to think Gary was being sincere. There did seem to be a lot of genuine goodwill towards Marcus from the judges and even from Dermot, maybe because Marcus is such a sweet natured guy.
I really hope he gets something out of all of this anyway.

DS is terrible for bitchy schadenfreude-full posts from people gloating whenever a contestant flops or even looks like they might flop. It's quite odd.

I think he probably said it with the best intentions but he should have thought it out first before saying it.
Based on what I have seen of Marcus on the show I really can't see that Gary is going to be in the position of picking and choosing the 'right' label, songs & management for Marcus. I can't imagine the likes of Eg White for example cueing up to write for him.
Like I said before, it would be kinder in the long run for Gary to sensibly manage Marcus' expectations rather than make him promises that I really don't see that he can keep

He will get on in a musical in london. Dream boats and petticoats or something. He smashed it with Cannonball last night. Much much better than Little mixes' version.

I think the opposite is true. For Marcus to have any success he needed to win the show - with the momentum of winning he would have enjoyed some reasonable success (albeit short-lived) with a single and an album full of bland covers. I really don't think he has anything else to offer that would warrant being approached by other labels as a non-winner of the show. Little Mix on the other hand are far more marketable, had they not won I am confident that they would still have gone on to be the most successful act to come from this years show

Personally I preferred the LM version but anyway..
Possibly he could get a slot in a musical, I think this is a more realistic option than a record deal with the best writers etc - and this is really my point about GB managing his expectations.
Yes, Ray Quinn is an international superstar...
I don't think Simon will sign Marcus but someone else could, and that would probably be better for him.
RQ had a starring role in 'Brookside' (and was very good in it) before going on XF and now plays lead roles in musicals.
I didn't, he came across as shallow and fake and I am a TT fan, really disliked him this series and I don't think he will be interested in such a weak proposition as Marcus once the hype and public interest dies down.

Blimey that's not still running is it? I saw it forever ago and it was dreadful then and the audience entirely full of OAP coach trips. Although maybe that's why it is still running!
I think Marcus will do well. He strikes me as a Olly Murs/Bruno Mars type singer and I think there is a space for him.
Rufus Hound was spot on in Saturday's Xtra Factor saying 2nd was the best place for him to come to escape the Syco machine. Little Mix will do fine because that's exactly what they need but Marcus needs something else.
Marcus was reallly out of his depth tonight.
He almost Came across as an 80's tribute act at times.
totally agree it Reeks of GB having total say over everything.
IMHO Gary aged the songs and everything about him hoping to appeal to the mum and Grans out there (like the song choice last night). He just came across as very dated it was a shame really.
I never got the impression it was a Gary Barlow dictatorship with Marcus. Didn't Marcus himself say he wanted to go that retro route? It really seemed like they had a good partnership. I still think Marcus needs to do something to differentiate himself from the likes of Bruno Mars, who does a similar retro thing live.

It was Syco which was the problem for Matt Cardle and little Joe - both of whom they didnt know how to market. Both are doing well without Syco.
Little Mix are pure pop for teenyboppers. Right up Sycos street.
And, yes, there is alot of bitchiness and schenfreude aimed at Marcus at the moment.
Wishing someone to fail even after they have lost is pure nastiness

In Joe's case, did his coming out of the closet right before releasing his album hurt him, marketabilty-wise? If it was in America, I think it would hurt him; was that the case in the UK?
Marcus has a chance of making it, but is a small chance. certainly away from Syco, but it will be difficult to find the right material for him to be a star. it's not impossible just hard, but we don;t know what material is available out there so it may be that what the perfect songs for him are already writen (by him?).
I keep going on about it, but Marcus is a mix between Joe and Olly, but imo without the best of both (incredible vocals - Joe, and distinctive voice/ memorable persona - Olly). Marcus is very likable as Joe (perfect for a reality TV), but almost as poor vocally as Olly and at least he has a distinctive tone.

There is nothing wrong with that either, Vidal Sassoon was a barber.
I am sure there is a market for Marcus, there is a market for all of them.:D
........In the same way that a tiger is marginally less dangerous than a lion.
In 6 months time Gary will be saying "Marcus who"?

Yes he'd do alright in that.
