Hi folks,

Just starting now...

New series. In the 1930s, borstal was a much-feared institution designed to reform young offenders by enforcing compulsory work, education, discipline and intense physical activity. In its heyday, the system worked, with low levels of reoffending, in stark contrast to today's statistics. In a social experiment, 13 trouble-makers - some of whom have criminal convictions - volunteer to become borstal boys, spending four weeks in a castle in Northumberland. Will the experience set them on the straight and narrow? Taking on the role of governor is one of the UK's leading criminologists, David Wilson

The problem is that they are all well over 18/21 IMO and there will be no corporal punishment which was common at the time.... Can you imagine the particpants authoring them to give them the cane/birch? LOL

I'm really looking forward to this. I used to really love Bad Lads Army. I like the Dr too, seen him in a few shows.

This could be an interesting one.

    Some rather unsavoury individuals here.

I think that if he'd spoken to the head warden like that he might well have gotten just that.

Is Peter Serafinowicz narrating? It makes it sound like a mockumentary.

I've just been reading up on this series and apparently some quit before the first week is over because they can't stand the regime. One even quit before the show started filming..

The one from Chatham, would have been sent to the first Borstal that was in Borstal, Rochester, Kent. My childrens home used to be just down the road from that Borstal and it was actually still open and in use then.

These aren't even 'likeable' rough diamonds like some of the ones in Bad Lads Army. Despicable.

I get the feeling that some of them will have spoken to others like that though.

You would if you were in there for real. Shame it's just a TV show and not reality.
