Problem installing Nvidia graphics driver

A friend is experiencing a problem whereby his PC is recognising the graphics card as a standard VGA adaptor. Presumably this is a driver issue, so I have gone to the Nvidia website to get the appropriate driver but when I go to install it the installation software is telling me it cannot find compatible graphics hardware.

A quick Google search directed me to this page.

I have followed the instructions but still the problem persists. I have also tried to follow the instructions for the below method but Command Prompt is saying it could not find the specified file path (or words to that effect). I don't believe I am typing in anything incorrectly.

I feel out of my depth here so I would appreciate any help. I should add the graphics card is an Nvidia Geforce 480.

In the second part are you getting the error when you try to execute the command

    CD windows\system32\wbem

If so then the problem could be that Command Prompt has not opened set to the root folder of C:. If so simply enter

    CD C:\windows\system32\wbem

    instead.

A bit more information would be handy. Did this problem develop in a working PC, or was it rebuilt, wiped/reinstalled?

I take you have tried the auto detect?

Ah, that fixed that little problem, but sadly the driver issue remains.

I have run auto-detect but it didn't work. The PC was recently wiped so as to create a fresh copy of Windows. Everything else seems to be in order, it's just the graphics card issue that has been a problem.

The system is equipped with an Intel i7 950 CPU @ 3.07GHz and 4GB RAM, running Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit).
