BBC1 non news regional opt outs

Is there actually a policy/rule for this?

Just noticed in the Radio Times for next week that the Northern regions are opting out of the Who Do You Think You Are Us series (a first run programme) to transmit their rugby programme.

The programme before it is a repeat of an extended Hignfy.

Why didn't BBC North show the rugby programme in place of Hignfy then rejoin network or network show Who do you think you are first instead?

BBC English Regions have got form for dodgy opt outs before a few years ago with another extended Hignfy, which never got shown in the West Midlands, due to a regional programme but took the following programme which was a repeat of a Room 101.

Obviously I don't object to regional programmes on BBC1, just their scheduling!

(This issue only affects Freeview though!)

Inside Out (English regions 7.30 pm on Mondays) are meant to be investigative programmes rather than hard news. Occasionaly the regions will mount non-news special programmes on merit. The Monday night football programme Late Kick-off seems to have disappeared from the schedules but it was a re-edit of Saturday highlights in any case. The national regions (or Nations as they like to call themselves) have non-news local programmes on both BBC1 and 2 but they have virtual complete autonomy in scheduling whereas the English regions don't this Friday for instance BBC1 Scotland is showing EastEnders at 9.30 pm because it has a live football match at 7.30.

Yeah, but you have to admit that example I mentioned above is particularly daft though!

BBC North could have transmitted the rugby at 1035 instead of Hignfy?

Possibly because the two programmes aren't the same length so they had to pick the one that matches the length of the rugby?

Nice bit of diversity to have variations. The pity is that the Rugby League show doesn't play over the whole country.

It's repeated on Tuesday afternoons on BBC2 and fully networked

Is the rugby programme transmitted live (for later repeat! )?
