Exercise ideas for skiing/skating muscles

As the title says really. I have recently started skiing & skating and really need to build up my strength, in my legs particularly to get control of what I'm doing!

I've thought of squats and lunges so far.

    the standard one, is leaning with your back against a wall, your feet a couple of feet away from the wall, and your thighs parallel to the ground, similar to a ski-ing position, and will make your thighs burn very quickly.
