I need to buy a printer, which ones work with HP Pavilion dv6 laptop?

  don't think its the type of laptop that matters, its the operating system.
  
  Don't think alot of printers will work with Vista.

  OP, it would be very hard to find a printer that didn't worth with your PC. I'm guessing if its very old it would have a parallel port and not USB.

  In which case all you need is a parallel to USB converter cable.

  What is more important is decide how you wish to connect your printer to the computer. There are 3 options ...
  
  1 Via USB cable direct to the computer (All printers have this option)
  2 Wireless via your home network (This is probably the recommended home solution)
  3 Ethernet connection to the network
  
  Decide how you wish to connect then choose printer with required interface.
