X-Factor / Opportunity Knocks

I know that the public vote for their favourite acts once the final 12 are chosen to go through to the lives, but why can't X-Factor be run like "Opportunity Knocks" (showing my age now!) whereby the audience votes all the way through?

Each act comes on stage, auditions, then the public vote on which ones to keep and which ones to reject. The only judges the acts then face are the great British people, in other words, the ones who will buy their CDs/MP3s etc.

That way, there will be fewer accusations of fakery, stitch-ups, favouritism etc. and the viewers will be seeing the acts they like and getting rid of the ones they don't.

Anyone else agree?
