Considering that Voyage of the Dawn Treader has pretty much flopped for Fox, i can't see them being in much of a hurry to make more.
As for the thread topic: Surely '2001: A Space Oddysey' is the film that spans the greatest amount of time.

Not so much a film, more a series, but Roots is good for spanning generations, and well worth watching.
Armageddon starts with an asteroid wiping out the dinosaurs (65 million years ago) to the present day.
Spans a good load of minutes perhaps, certainly not years.
