Ok so I will ask the question....why has Clive got it wrong if everyone else gets it right?

The BBC have called to right too. I remember Steve Wilson getting a bit of stick for pronouncing it Hames before it emerged that it was indeed the correct pronunciation.

Really did enjoy Guy Mowbray's commentary tonight. I've never been convinced he should be number one, but he really did convey the drama brilliantly well.

Surprised Keown was chosen for this one over Lawrenson. It feels like the Beeb really want a new number 1 co-commentator, they tried with Neville, now they're trying with Keown. I think he's perfectly okay, prefer him to Townsend.

I must say i've always like Mowbray as a commentator even when he was at ITV many years ago. I do agree that he did bring the drama of the game and occasion over very well, but that is a lot easier when you are on site at the ground. Although unlikely imagine if the Greece v Costa Rica game tomorrow is a brilliant match with similar drama, then ITV won't be able convey the drama as well due to them doing an offtube commentary. Shocking.

    Not IF true......it is!!!:o

As I said if he does his home work before hand then surely he would know the correct way to announce it.

Guy Mowbray i thought was really good on the Brazil vs Chile match, he and Keown seemed to work well as a paring, there were a few areas of disappointment, not even deliberating whether the brazil goal could have been an own goal was a mistake. But although Keown hasnt gone down well on this thread as a co-commentator he certainly gave a decent performance and is much better than Lawro (which isnt very hard at all!).

Jonathan Pearce and Mark Lawrenson onsite in the Maracana for highlights of Colombia v Uruguay, and Steve Bower is already in Fortaleza for Mexico v Holland tomorrow. If BBC can do onsite commentary for highlights then there is certainly no reason why ITV can't do onsite commentary for live games.

    totally agree

bbc pundits stated it was a great game
RTE pundits of Ronnie Whelan, Liam Brady and Ritchie Sadlier gave the opposite view and the truth, it was a poor game
Shearer the new head bbc pundit from next season, he is so poor and that report before the game was so bad

    No, just no ;-)

RTÉ's punditry team tend to take as negative a view as possible and say things for maximum effect. They do this to be the polar opposite of the UK stations (actually pride themselves on it) but in general they come across as bitter and twisted and dare I say total bores, the type of people you run screaming from in a pub after watching a match.

They feel the need to compete with the UK stations (perhaps understandably but why?) and because of their outspokenness - which far too many mistake for honesty -they have built up an audience in Ireland that think it sacrilege to watch stations from Britain when they're on. However that audience is being chipped away by the mix of light-heartedness and decent, fresh analysis from pundits who are still playing or have just retired.

Dunphy was still calling Ronaldo a one-trick pony up to a couple of season's ago but calling Colombia a bunch of headless chickens following their victory over Uruguay last night was just a pathetic scream for attention.

If they were calling Brazil v Chile a poor game they do this from some sense of purism in relation to the game but the view of bitter twisted ex-professionals really doesn't resonate with 98% of viewers who watch a game of football simply to get enjoyment from it. I (and most watching I suspect) thought it was a thrilling game and if a group of people on TV are saying different afterwards it'll just make them look silly.

The best thing about RTÉ's football coverage is Apres Match, which rips all the pundits to shreds and usually goes very close to the bone (I can imagine some of the team squirming watching it).

    They were not bitter

Let's get real Brazil v Chile was a dramatic game but it was not a great game

I think most Irish TV viewers have been brainwashed by the banal tv pundits from Sky Sports, Bt Sport, BBC and ITV
RTE's blunt analysis is like the analysis from a few economic experts that Ireland was facing a crisis due the property bubble years ago and now!

Yes - Neville, Carragher, Souness, Rio, Dixon, Keane, O'Neill, Strachan, Henry, Murphy - what would they know in comparison to the 1970s Millwall player, the man whose last involvement in football got West Brom relegated in 1986 and the bloke who scored in the Euro U18 third-fourth play-off in the late-90s.

I catch their stuff on occasion and it's merely controversy for controversy's sake, nothing more, and it's their policy across all their sports coverage. The line on Ronaldo they used before about Platini, Gascoigne, Cantona and Zidane.

Thankfully nowadays people want knowledge and tactical nous from their pundits, alongside a recent playing career.

Not sure I can understand why, surely a commentator does his home work before of any names and how to be announced, if in any doubt speak to the team etc, or is that to easy.

Do all you lot moaning about how Clive Tydlsley pronounces 'James' also moan about the numerous other incorrect Spanish name pronunciations done by pretty every British commentator - eg Sergio Ramos is pronounced nothing like how it should be.

I guess ultimately it going to be very difficult to pronounce a lot of foreign names correctly. And how far should our commentators go? Should they start rolling their 'r's for correctly pronouncing the names of many European and South American players?

    Sunday 29th June - BT Sport 1

Live FA Women's Super League: Liverpool Ladies v Arsenal Ladies & Everton Ladies v Chelsea Ladies

Helen Skelton presenting from the Select Security Stadium alongside Mark Sampson and Ellen White

Commentators: Steve Wyeth and Lucy Ward

I believe the presentation and commentary teams will be the same for both matches of this double header.

Talk about an 'old boys club' for the BBC etc in the past. RTE sounds like it from brief clips i've seen of their studio. The usual pundits are three dinosaurs slating everything.

Steve Wyeth was a regular commentator on BT Sport's coverage of the European leagues they have rights to including the Bundesliga and Serie A last season. He also freelances for BBC Radio Manchester and Radio 5 Live (he was the former's Manchester United reporter for a number of seasons) and commentates on Champions League and Europa League games for UEFA.com.

He seems to be one of the more prominent commentators they use on European games, so UEFA.com commitments permitting I wouldn't be surprised if he's among the commentators they use on their coverage of all-continental European club Champions League and Europa League games come 2015/16.

Clearly he's getting the opportunity to commentate on these WSL games as most of their regular commentators on matches involving UK teams are in Brazil for the World Cup. I think I'm right in saying that Steve is the seventh different commentator BT Sport has used for a match from one the British competitions they have rights to (Premier League, SPFL, FA Cup, Conference Premier, WSL) since it's launch last summer. As well as their main four in Ian Darke, Darren Fletcher, Derek Rae and Steve Bower; Dave Farrar has done a few Conference and women's matches and I remember Tim Caple doing a WSL game earlier this year.

It's brilliant, such emotion shown. I heard this last night and Tim Vickery added in that sometimes the commentators launch into "GOOOLLLL" before they know who has scored and the co-comm has to write down who has scored :D

Brazil game peaked at 12m for BBC yesterday (during penalties). Great figure

The match overall rated well too

Uru vs Colombia was poor at under 5m.

Sorry, I believe every post about viewing figures at the World Cup has to refer to the "ratings war".

    Apologies for that omission.

BBC won last nights battle despite showing a different game at a different time with different teams including the most high profile team left in the competition in a dramatic penalty shoot out. ITV's game didn't quite hit those entertainment heights.

I've only just come across this (was on my youtube 'watch later' list for a while) but Fox Sports Australia recently uploaded a video showing what happens at their OB unit during a game.

When we get to the QFs I think it's almost certain that Fri 5pm will be pick 4 (possibly France v Germany). If BBC has pick 4 there is no chance ITV will voluntarily take Fri 5pm as they won't want to go up against a Murray semi so they'll force BBC to take that slot - exactly as they did with Mon 5pm. If that happens, Murray may then become the 1st semi-final.

If ITV has pick 4 then BBC will make ITV have the Fri 5pm game and it'll be badly affected by Murray in the 2nd semi-final.

If ITV end up showing Friday 5pm it would be an exact repeat of what we had in the quarter finals in 1998 when ITV had both matches on the Friday and the Beeb were then able to show Tim Henman's semi-final at Wimbledon on BBC1 which carried on into the early evening, pushing the news late and eventually meaning Top of the Pops went out at 11pm.

You would have to say that although Friday 5pm is the worst in terms of scheduling if it turns out to be France vs Germany that would be a very attractive match-up. You'd assume that this time the Beeb won't go for both 5pm matches, unless they've realy stopped considering kick-off times.

Surely it is better for the BBC that the audience is split between BBC1 and BBC2 than between BBC1 and ITV?

Maybe, but it also means it's a bit of a waste of the rights they have. It's like next Sunday when they'll have Wimbledon on BBC1 and the Grand Prix on BBC2, together they'll totally dominate but I'm sure the BBC would have been happier if both were on separate weekends so they could give them both the publicity they deserve.

Yes Germany are one of the favourites... but so are Argentina.
And most bookies seem to think Argentina are more likely to win than Germany (offering 7/2, compared to 4/1).

So surely their match against Switzerland would be far less competitive than Germany vs Algeria? There'll almost certainly be a couple of chances to show Argentina after this round.

I must admit that I had absolutely no idea this was on television until I read both this post and a tweet from Jacqui Oatley about ten minutes ago. I'm afraid since the World Cup started I haven't bothered looking at the Sky or BT schedules at all. I know the WSL is a summer league but I really don't think this is the best time to be showing live matches from it. I know they're not opposite live football but nobody's paying attention to them. They should really show loads in July and early August when there's absolutely no other football opposition.

Of course, last night Baker and Kelly's BT show ended up going out opposite the penalty shoot-out which must have made for rather distracted broadcasting. Sadly I didn't see it because, as I've mentioned before, I simply haven't had time to watch any of this series.

ITV had both Friday matches in 2010 too - Brazil V Holland was one of the more attractive games but in the least attractive timeslot (Friday 3pm I think) so basically seemed to be a 4th choice game with Drury and Burley commentating on it. I think that was opposite Andy Murray?

ITV have Tour de France scheduled for next Saturday. Is that something that could easily move across to ITV4 or would they be likely to try and pick an alternative timeslot?

Well, the Tour de France coverage is scheduled to finish at 5pm if they don't show football, so you'd only lose the last hour to ITV4 (to be honest you could even start the football coverage at 4.30) and they'd have been on since 10.30am. Not a major tragedy.

I suppose Saturday 5pm would be a better slot for the Beeb because the ladies' final at Wimbledon is almost always over by that point, they've shown Live 8 and Live Earth on that day in the past decade. The weather for this week also means it looks unlikely that you'd end up with Murray, or any other major match, in that slot. So you could end up with the Beeb showing both games on Saturday. That would mean not showing France vs Germany which would probably be second choice in sporting terms but the other two matches are both going to be pretty good and you can also cope with Murray on Friday as well.

The Beeb aren't going to end up showing both 5pm matches again, are they?
