Setting up a Desktop Email Client for a Hotmail Account

I'm going out of my mind with this and I'm sure there's a simple way around it.

Basically i have Windows Vista and I have been using the Windows Live Mail program on my PC to access my emails. Recently it doesn't want to sync and it won't receive my email. (Brings up server error 0x0072EFF if that means anything to anyone).

I can't uninstall and re-install as you don't appear to be able to Download Microsoft Essentials 2011 any more with vista, and it is part of that.

I can't use Microsoft Outlook, it doesn't like that.

So...I either need a way to make Windows Live Mail 2011 work again, or a different email Desktop thing that will do a better job.

As you can tell I'm not THAT PC literate so please don't blind me with jargon. Thank you!

This seems to be server settings error, check these to make sure they are all correct.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-vista/windows-mail-setting-up-an-account-from-start-to-finish

    Try that.

    But

If this fails remove your Email account from Windows Live Mail, try installing the account again and setup again but if that fails, install Windows Live Mail 2012 (This is better and has updated settings).

Then reinstall the account again, which will detect the correct settings

The OP has Vista, Windows Essentials 2012 is not compatible with Vista according to Microsoft.

    Thanks.

I can't seem to find my server exchange settings so I dont know what Im meant to put there.

Where can I get Windows Live Mail 2012 from (without a whole load of other crap downloading with it?)

EDIT: Just saw the post above re WLM 2012.

Download from here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-live/essentials and choose custom (untick unnecessary stuff)

Did you migrate your Hotmail account to Outlook.com when Microsoft asked you to a few months ago?

Can you access your email via a web browser?

You could try Thunderbird e-mail client. That should set up the Hotmail account for you

    https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/?icn=tabz

Just feed it your username, password and e-mail address and it does the rest

Another vote for Thunderbird here :)

I've seen that screen before a few times!

It just says "Windows Live Essentials 2011 is no longer available to download for Windows Vista."

    I'm giving Thunderbird a go.

Also have a look here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/livemail-email/windows-live-mail-error-id-0x80072eff/06f8bf69-1852-4ca2-aeba-1bbb27eeece3

I'd try that thing with firewall, it may need an exception rule. Also try to log on to your account via web interface. If 2 step login is turned on, you will need to use an app password with WLM.

Hooray! Thunderbird seems to do the trick.

I even copied the server settings from Thunderbird over to Windows Live Mail and it still didn't like it. Weird.

Thanks for all of your help.

If you stick with Thunderbird then I suggest you also download Mozbackup

    http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

This will back up your Thunderbird profile which includes all the settings and messages- you can select exactly what it backs up. Save the file it creates somewhere safe and it can be a life saver if something screws up. Or if you decide to upgrade it is an easy way to transfer all your settings and messages to the new computer.

I've used it to upgrade and also a couple of times when Windows played silly bu**ers and screwed up my user profile and as a result Thunderbird.

Just as a follow up to this, I appear to have downloaded something called GamesDesktop which is frankly a pain the arse and causes other things to download to my machine and I get endless pop-ups.

    HELP!

Googling "GamesDesktop" displays a number of links describing how to remove it. Have you tried their suggestions?

I've sort of tried but whenever I open an internet broswer its an uphill struggle keeping on top of pop-ups!

Can you remember which application you installed that might have surreptitiously bundled GamesDesktop with it?

If and when you get it sorted always be careful when you install free applications. Make sure you untick the often pre-ticked "complementary" software.

For the better known applications it's worth trying a site such as ninite.com, which takes care of such issues for you.

I assume you have anti-virus? This won't stop you from inadvertently downloading unwanted applications but another helpful tool is ad-blocking extensions in whatever browser you use. They just decrease the likelihood that you might accidentally click on an ad that will kick off an adware/spyware download.

Restart computer in Safe Mode with Networking

(repeatedly tap F8 after pressing the power button)

See if this guide does the job http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-games-desktop-virus/#uninstall
