Its a reconditioned Dell laptop

great ....... but no instruction book.

No cables except the power cable, no mouse

Managed to get the BT code in and finally got on net and downloaded f fox
browser.

Next time I used it I got f fox up... got google
thought I d download winamp

the winamp download came in the list

I hit that and the address changed to a BT address
and it said , download BT toolkit etc .. this will help you on line etc.

I thought, why do I need BT software on my comp... ?

I previously put the code in, connected to the signal. wots the prob... ?

Each time I put an address into the address box it morphed back to this
BT page... download this ... etc. we ll help you connect

But I must have ben connected otherwise google would nt have given me
all the winamp info

In the end I gave up and switched off

If it's second hard, the first thing I would do is a factory restore. Most Dell PCs have a recovery partition.

What model number is it? You can download a manual from Dell if you need to.

think I saw a little adobe type file on the desktop that is probably their
    attempt at a user manual

But you want an instruction book in your hand !
you want a few cables and gizmos that must have been in the
original package I feel a bit short changed with this Dell recon

    Its a Dell 531 Laptop
    15.4 " Windows 7 ( when new prob cost twice what I paid )

But that does nt explain why ... I hit winamp download.... and should go
to the winamp site, instead I end up on a BT page.........
download the BT tool kit etc.

Anyway at least Ive got a wireless mouse working in there, I can drag and drop
    I can scroll the pages
( using the finger pad was a bit of a pain)

It's a laptop, what other cables were you expecting to get besides the power cable?

No, you have never been able to transfer files by USB cable.

The Dell 531 is quite an old PC. How old did you think it was? I doubt it came with Windows 7 originally.

    You try this:

Restore the computer's software to original condition.

An external peripheral is a device that connects to a port on the front, side or back of the computer, like a printer or memory key.
    Turn on the computer.
As the computer starts, press < F8 > on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.
You must press before the Windows logo appears on the screen. If you press after the Windows logo appears on the screen, the Advanced Boot Options menu will not appear on the screen. If you do not see the Advanced Boot Options menu, restart the computer, and then repeat this step until you see the menu on the screen.
Press the < Down Arrow > on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press < Enter >.
Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.
Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.
    Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.
Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box.
    Click Next.
The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.
When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.

Try a USB flash drive, or your broadband router after connecting both your laptop and desktop and sharing the files you want.

no search capture by BT and I got winamp downloaded
got a couple of stations favourited.

    I downloaded faststone image viewer

Its going to be slow but eventually I ll download enough stuff to
make the laptop useful, maybe even a free version of photoshop ?

I got my e mail addresses and other info in there via notepad and looks like windows 7 operates notepad.

    Prob download Open Office too.

must be 50 plus radio favourited in my desktop winamp
Its a pain having to start from scratch in my laptop !

Not sure if serious, but I'll bite.

An ethernet cable, either direct or over a LAN
    WiFi (as above)
    bluetooth
    a USB flash drive
    an SD card
    an external Hard Drive
    Dropbox
    A CD/DVD/Blu-ray

A standard USB cable won't work.

A USB Transfer cable has electronics built-in and will.

Transferring via ethernet cable or WiFi to Hub/Router is slow if you have lots of GBs.

A good solution is a USB external hard drive and can be used also to regularly backup your computers.
Most people forget that this will cost an extra £40-50+ (new) and don't see the need anyway, so don't bother.

(You can get 2nd hand barebones 2.5" SATA drives on eBay and stick them in a caddy for ~£20.
Not all drives on eBay are on their last legs or from dodgy sellers. But it is a risk)

Is there an easy way to lock up the info on this dell laptop
so even if the comp is pinched, the info will be safe and ungetable.

THANKS thats useful info, but I was thinking of maybe
a password you have to put in when the laptop is switched on

You can set a BIOS password, but it won't stop anyone simply removing the hard drive and using it in another machine.

USB sockets carry power. Even if you could buy a USB-USB cable, you'd probably fry one or both pc's.

yes they carrry power but its a tiny 3 volts

not exactly going to fry a comp

Surely if you put two computors on a desk, connect them up by
    a usb cable,
then go to ....... my computor.......
you are going to see the other comp come up as a hard drive...

then you can send or move stuff there...
    or even drag and drop

    I dont see the prob

Several people tell you it can't be done, and yet you keep asking. Why don't you just try it and find out?
