HTC Desire contacts problem

I have all my phone numbers stored in gmail, so I synced them to the Desire. They show up when I look at HTC People - all my names and numbers are there.
But when I try to text people, I open the Messages app, hit the little + button in 'To', and nothing.... none of my contacts appear. I tried the same in Handcent, with no success.
I don't know how to set it up so that my texting applications can access my contacts.
