I want to surprise someone with a meal at one of Londons best restaurants. So which one, in your opinion, is the best?

I've been to a few but the run away leader is Le Gavroche.

What's your budget? The very top places will easily set you back £100 a head with drinks (as will some of the decidedly average places).

Been to The Ivy once, and "nice enough" but I would say far from the best.

Really depends on what you're after food wise but if you're after something traditional I can recommend

If you're going for name recognition wow factor then The Ivy probably gets it tbh, but it's a bitch getting a table, it's expenseive and it isn't the best food in London, although it is up there near the top.

Lots of different cuisines out there, here are a bunch that are really rated in their area of speciality and most are central London:

Hakkusan is amazing for Modern Indian
Painted Heron is also a great Indian in Chelsea (so a bit less central)
Arbutus or The Wolseley is great for Modern European
Pollen Street Social gets rave reviews for British (although I haven't been there myself)
    Nobu for Japanese
Le Gavroche or The Square for French
    Scotts for Fish
Murano or Bocca de Lupo for Italian

Most of these are pretty pricey so if cost is something you care about have a look on the Square meal website. There are loads of really amazing restaurants that are cheaper than most of these. However for Wow factor most of these have got it. Enjoy:)

I've eaten at a lot of the restaurants mentioned above. I couldn't say enough about El Parador near Mornington Crescent station - it's perfect . . .

If you go on Michelin stars then there's two choices, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay or Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester. You're looking probably £150 each at least though.

Good for celeb spotting and decent food but hasn't even got a star.

That does sound like a euphemism :)

There really is no answer to this as there are thousands of restaurants in London of all cuisines and budgets with places opening and closing all of the time. I've had poor meals in £100 a head places and great feasts in greasy spoons.

    Some websites for ideas

How about Langhans by Green Park Station? Its busy and buzzy and you can star watch. Very attentive service and not that expensive and I had the best fish and chips ever there a couple of weeks ago.

Le Gavroche has two stars. I personally wouldn't go anywhere near Gordon Ramsay's place.
