Similar game to The Settlers
Hi,
I'm not a big gamer, and have never once played one on my Macbook, but have been thinking about The Settlers, a game I played religiously on my Amiga 20 years ago when I was a spotty 12 year old without a care in the world. I really loved the world-building aspect of it: starting with a farm, a windmill to produce flour to give to the baker for bread; corn to the pig farm; pigs to the butcher. etc. Then a bit of fighting.
What is 2014's version of The Settlers?
Cheers
Will

It's a fun game. Download Steam and download it from there for about £3.99
Anno 1701 is the best place to start.

I have settlers 2 10th anniversary edition on DS, and an iPad version that doesn't really cut it, so if you do end up finding something that does scratch that settlers itch, please let me know!

You may also want to consider the Stronghold games which are pretty similar.
I was going to suggest the same when I read the OP
Settlers 7 gold is the way to go for a relatively modern game - Amazon have it for around a fiver.

I think, I say THINK, you don't need to be permanently online to play it these days, but you will need to run uPlay at start up. (I checked - you do need to be online for the DLC to work and some people still complain about connection problems).
Or go to GoG and pick up the Settlers 2: 10th Anniversary Edition, which is considered to be the best version.

Now, if you're a masochist there's also Dwarf Fortress but much as I love it, it has a steep learning curve. Steep like a cliff face.
