It works both ways. I've known many people who have absolutely no conversation apart from football but will take the mick out of me for watching Emmerdale.
It works both ways. I've known many people who have absolutely no conversation apart from football but will take the mick out of me for watching Emmerdale.
I'm in Newcastle, and here I would say a very large proportion of people follow football and the club.
I am an armchair fan personally. I want them to do well, but if they don't that is no big deal. I occasionally go to games but not very often, and I don't often watch the footy on TV unless its my own team playing, or I'm with mates.
Having said that, I'm happy to watch football with friends and family, doesn't bother me. I'm neither one way nor the other. If my partner liked footy, I would be happy for her to watch the matches, and would probably watch as well. I have been to the game with her and we enjoyed it.
I'm probably pretty unusual too that I have no scathing towards mackems (Sunderland), although I do think some of them are foolish to walk around the [Newcastle] city centre with their red and wipe stripes on, they can't complain if they get abused.
The only people I don't have time for are those who, because you may not follow it religiously, or that you might be from outside the boundary of Newcastle city itself, give you abuse for it and seem to actually want to fight you in some cases. Really no need, and just shows limited intellect.
I don't like football, nor beer, nor pornography. And I'm not interested in cars, except as a way to get around.
I understand now that that puts me in a minority ....
With football, it is just so dull, and the game is seriously flawed (eg. 1990 World Cup final (or semi-final?) Brazil vs. Italy; Brazil played far better, yet they had to rely on penalties to decide the winner, which could easily have gone the other way.)
I also don't like the way it's rammed down my throat at every opportunity. For example, I used to listen a lot to Talk Radio, now it is Talk Sport and 24-hour football. With Radio 5, the understanding is that football is only on evenings and weekends, yet you listen during the day, and within ten minutes you just know they're going to mention football. Radio 4 and LBC (except Sat afternoons) are the only guaranteed football-free zones.
There's a problem with feral footballers around these parts. If players aren't much good or are past it, the club dumps them out of a coach in the middle of nowhere, and they just sort of roam around at random in their old kit kicking anything that gets in their way. Terrible it is.
I'm utterly bemused by 'football fans' these days, particularly those of Premier League clubs - it really is as though they have been brainwashed and are totally incapable of thinking/talking about anything else.
The fact of the matter is that they're having the piss taken out of them by cynical arseholes who 'earn' more money in a week than they earn in about 5 years and who have no loyalty whatsoever to their 'club', yet they worship the ground they walk on.
In the pub/cricket changing room/at work when talk inevitably turns to football, my eyes glaze over and I fall into a temporary coma. Very little could interest me less.
Aside from my family and health [ the things that are above anything else ], football is my main passion, along with music. Ever since I was small, I have just loved it - I played it all the time, I went to watch matches - not the big teams but AFC Bournemouth, as they were the nearest team to where I lived. For 25 years, I went to hundreds of matches and its only in recent years that having a family and no money, as well as moving further away, that I have sadly not been able to go.
I know there are faults in the game, many of which are well known but for me and many millions of other people, there is no other sport that can match the pure drama, tension and excitement of a good football match. And yes, I know there are dull games too!
There were matches last season for example, where one kick of a game changed the whole season that had preceded it. One missed penalty that resulted in the other team breaking away and scoring at the other end and changing their destiny. Its the biggest and best sport on the planet and no-one here can change that.
It's not just about the guys these days either - an awful lot of females go to games all the time and are just as passionate and knowledgeable as the men. Its very old fashioned and sexist to think its just a game that men go to.
The comment earlier from someone that thought any man that liked football was braindead was horrifying! How dare she think that! Its just a ridiculous comment and I would say anyone lucky enough to not marry her would be well happy!
One thing that does my nut in...you watch quiz shows...the subject comes up...'football'...and you get the odd contestant that looks appalled! Like they are about to be asked about something that surely no-one should ever be asked about. Kind of forgetting just how big and popular football actually is.
I don't actually care too much for the Premiership to be honest, although I would watch any game at any level in theory, as I just love the actual game. For me, following lower teams has always been much more fun and the lower you go, invariably, the club will be much more part of the community, encouraging people of all ages to be part of a team. There is SO much to be positive about the sport, so for those against it, don't think its all about the top few clubs and the tiny % that earn too much, there is much, much more to football than that.
So...for me...I don't like the reactions of people that don't like football, when they find out I do!!
I see our cricketers decided it would be funny to use a cricket pitch as their toilet..
Just think of the negative reaction and headlines there would be if that had been a group of footballers?
I am a fan of both and delighted England won the Ashes again but reading about the reaction towards footballers here got me thinking..
I suppose it would depend on who it was - the press wouldn't care if it was anyone below the Premier league which I agree does get over-hyped at times.
A female friend of mine has just posted on Facebook about the fact football is on ITV just now and that means 'there is nothing to watch on the telly'.....I replied nicely by suggesting it is very strange that ITV are showing something popular that millions of people would want to watch, how dare they!
And...another sweeping generalisation...how many people who moan about football being on ITV, happily sit and watch all the soaps, which are on pretty much every night of the week?!
My friend is now suggesting that all sport should be on pay TV channels...obviously forgetting that millions either can't afford them or won't give their money to Murdoch etc...would she be so keen to have a pay channel for all her soaps!!

And rightly so
But I just watch it, I don't bore for England about it. :D

As it happens, yes...
No matter how you try to dress it up it really is.
Really stupid thing I remember some kids saying when I was at school.:D
i love you, bye
guys that dont like football = marriage material
because it shows me they're not braindead and into boring sh**
I can't be bothered being an advocate of football to people who aren't prepared to see both sides.
Here's what to do when you see the error of your ways ....:D
If only I could find a girl around here who shared your opinion. The ones that aren't already taken are football obsessed.
Love it!
Not because you don't like football, but because you judge others who don't like the same things as you as braindead.
Makes you sound like a bit of an arsehole.

What's "marriage material" ? Guys who will take you around the shops at weekends, who will watch all the soaps with you and not go down the pub ?
Thanks for the info, but I'll stick with being boring and braindead. Love you too, bye.

My Husband is football mad and far from braindead, lovely sweeping generalisation there, are you still single??
I can't stand football by the way, I married my hubby anyway, how boring it would be if we all liked the same things
Just think of the negative reaction and headlines there would be if that had been a group of footballers?

As demonstrated in this thread!
Because I sure as hell didn't.
