There was a lovely tribute to him from Jimmy Armfield on R4's Today programme this morning, and he reminded us that in the days before satellite and multi-channel TV (and when even teletext was in its infancy) very often the first time you'd hear how your team got on, particularly if they were in the lower leagues, was with JAG reading the results on Sports Report. A little transistor radio and earpiece was all many of us had in those seemingly far off days!

Iconic voice of his era along with Peter Jones and Bryon Butler and he will be greatly missed.

And so soon after his retirement too. That's even more upsetting :(

Read he had cancer so guess that was the reason for retiring.

He had his larynx removed which created obvious problems. Apparently when BBC Sport moved to Salford he was allowed to stay in London and read the results from a tiny studio in BH with his producer at his side.

Remember him reading the news on Radios 1 and 2. His handovers to David Hamilton at 2.02 pm back in 1976 and presenting various music shows for Radio 2 such as You and the Night and the Music.
