Always remember in the early 1990's getting some route planning software and its only route into norfolk was via that damm town even if you did have to drive about 300 extra miles to enter the place
To be honest Swaffham has always been considered one of the rougher towns in Norfolk, there really isn't very much there apart from the wind turbine. Until quite recently the schools were considered poor and there is very little in the way of shops or pubs. If you are serious about moving to Norfolk I'd have a look a some of the other market towns ahead of Swaffham. Dereham, Fakenham, Aylsham, Holt, Wymondham, Attleborough, Cromer, Sheringham, Diss or North Walsham for example - all nicer than Swaffham in my opinion. Or better still, as transport is so notoriously bad in Norfolk- move to Norwich instead!
Stephen Fry is very sweet about the place, he does like to support the local area however he doesn't live in Swaffham and I can't imagine he ever would!
Oh and by the way Alan Partridge isn't real!
I was going to write a post but this one has pretty much said what I would have.
It is definitely one of the rougher towns. I don't feel as though I am walking among the intellectual elite when I'm there.
Also, the location is not great. It's just not near anywhere at all.
You mean there are people who actually like them ?
Really like them?
Really really?
They did a prog on local radio about turbines. A reporter went to Swaffham and it was obvious they wanted to get some complainers on air to balance the prog up and it was really funny because everyone they asked said they didn't mind them at all. They had some old dear who lived right underneath one and she said she hardly knew it was there.
You should have come to Diss. Swaffham is in a part of the county I find to be a bit alien... ;-)
I viewed a house in. Diss, loved it, it's Victorian house in Victoria Rd and the lovely vendor took me around the town centre and showed me some hidden gems (street) which is right up my street as it's similar to Dulwich Village in a smaller scale of course.
I saw this house before we went to Swaffham, made an offer but it was rejected.
Yes, I know that. Steve Coogan's character Alan Partridge had a run in with Norfolk farmers in his comedy 'I'm Alan Partridge'. The dead cow that fell on him from a bridge over a canal is comedy genius.

I doubt it'll be an alive-and-kicking type of place. It depends what kind of person you are, your stage in life, and what you like.
It's not Norfolk.
The locals love the wind turbine?
Really ?

It should be twinned with most of it.
To be fair I do actually love the wind turbine. Great view from the top, bit scary if it's windy though.
Why? Norfolk is nice.
I quite like it too and worked in the area for years, although I never liked Watton, Thetford, Brandon and Swaffham.

Brandon also not in Norfolk.

But yes, I would have happily live in Diss.
Oh my god.... just oh my god!

Go to Dereham, The Railway Tavern .Good cheap Beer, 5Pints for a Tenner in a huge Jug. And the added Bonus of a good Fish and Chip Shop"inside" Pub.:)
It's next door to Thetford so close enough to avoid.
Yeah you keep thinking that:)
OP Norfolk is fantastic, I'm so envious of you.
Norfolk and fantastic in the same sentence. That's a new one. Seriously though, you got the Broads and The Wash, both places I'd like to visit.
