Elaine Paige for the golden oldie slot.

She'd do it for sure but she's starry enough to be an impressive signing.

    Oh, please note Sherrie Hewson.
    Any of the others, though.

Good point. There have been 60 somethings in Strictly, particularly in 2010 but I read last year that the producers were feeling that older people would not be up to it and during the last three seasons there has only been one 60+ celeb in each series, which supports my comment.

Nonetheless I would be happy to see older people having a go.

I don't think it's a coincidence that only two series in the history of Strictly had more than one over-60 on them, and they both came shortly after the show copped a huge load of negative publicity about ageism for ditching Arlene.

I would love to see Angela but isn't she dance-trained to some level? Also, she did Dancing on Ice just four years ago and I don't think she will want to play the serial reality show contestant.

If we want to go down the the BBC old-time broadcaster route then how about Anna Ford (71), Moira Stuart (65) or Selina Scott (63)?
I think Angela Rippon is dance-trained, but I'm pretty sure it's in ballet, not ballroom/latin, so there would be no reason why she couldn't do Strictly on that account.

Another mature female celeb could be Jan Francis. She is ballet-trained but gave up dancing 46 years ago. I think, when it comes to older celebs, the disadvantages of age balance out previous training, especially if that training was so long ago. It's not quite the same as someone who left stage school 5 years ago and is still lithe and physically fit.

Definitely! I completely agree with that.

Suzanne Packer from Casualty would be a good older (not old) signing, and she's Colin Jackson's sister, so there'd be a nice family connection. :)

    Gymnast Lisa Mason?

Britain's No.1 gymnast in the late 1990's. Double Commonwealth gold medallist. Retired in 2000 but started again in 2013 without any funding and has reached a high level, but unlikely to reach the very high level of the current British team.

Now 33 y.o. she would probably learn the dancing very fast.

I'd like to see a female gymnast on strictly - they've had quite a few female gymnasts on DWTS but we've yet to see one on strictly - we've had the two males Louis Smith and Matt Baker - given how popular and good they proved to be, you'd think they should give a female gymnast a chance. Unfortunately I can see this set of producers rejecting her because she's not high profile enough or because she's not dating a famous person or some other such silly reason.

As I said earlier I think they're going to want a male winner this year - I wonder if they'll make it as obvious as they did in series 11 when they wanted a female winner by not putting any male contenders in the line up or as obvious as 'Sewing Bee' made it when they wanted their first male winner. I think we've got quite a few tedious male 'journeys' to look forward to :(

I'd like to see Joanna on the show. She is fun and would do well I think.

Why is it that all of a sudden I have an image of Dawn French appearing on this year!!!! Why :o

If they get Tom Daley on the show I can easily see him being the chosen male winner.

So far I am fairly confident we will see Katie Price / Michelle Keagen in the line up for this year.

I'm not convinced we'll see Michelle Keegan just yet, not as long as she's got acting work coming in, which seems to be the case at the moment. According to IMDb, she has another role coming up, which will be filming later this year - although that could mean the summer, just as easily as the autumn/winter.

I'm hoping the producer will drop the winner gender fixing. I can understand that some idiot higher up in the BBC may have been nervous about a string of male winners.

Gymnastics isn't a high profile sport, but it takes a huge amount of commitment, and Lisa is doing this without the funding and full time training and physio etc. of the British Team members.

Claudia Fragapane is currently the big name in British gymnastics after winning 3 Commonwealth gold medals last year, but a week ago Lisa finished second on Floor at the English championships - 2 places ahead of Claudia, who is a floor specialist.
Maybe Lisa is doing well enough to not welcome an offer from Strictly just now?

I doubt they can get Tom just yet - isn't he still diving and busy with his media career? Personally I think if they get Mike Tindall he'll be the chosen one - he'll go on a 'journey' and all the arse licking along the way is going to be excruciating :(

Please tell me the Katie Price rumour is a bad joke? I've avoided the other thread for that very reason.....I've got a very low opinion of these current producers so I wouldn't be surprised if they did stoop this low, but I kind of thought or was hoping Katie Price would rule herself out once she realises that she'd actually have to do a bit of work - unless the producers let her get away with doing as little as possible like they did with Widdy! I mean Richard Desmond might think it's ok to pay her big fat fee for sitting on her arse in a house but if the BBC pay her big fee to do virtually nothing then I will be >:(

Good, I don't want to see or on strictly, especially if it means we have to put up with more of Mark cheesy Wright.

I hope they drop the gender fixing - to me series 11 ended up becoming a farce because of it, especially when it became so obvious which contestant the producers were gunning for - it'll be good if they could get Lisa in a future series - I just rembered Gabby Logan did gymnastics in her youth didn't she? Such a pity she had an early exit because the producers didn't want to offend Rod Stewart.

It would be nice to see a female sports woman win strictly one day - I think it's a shame when the females are slaughtered for being a bit competitive yet it's seen as a good thing when the males are.

Well, women tend to not mind a competitive male ;-)

Think that only Jessica Ennis would really stand a chance in that category, but only in 2017 (assuming she retires early after the OS next year). After all, Denise Lewis came close (and not dissing Denise, but Ennis is bigger because of 2012).

I think you're generalising tbh - I don't mind competitive males or females as long as they're not overly so. I'd rather see a competitive contestant anyday though, than someone who went on about their neeeervves or someone going on about 50 million times about how they're a 'novice'.

I think Jessica would certainly be popular if she did strictly but whether she won or not depends whether she can dance and who she was up against - remember Victoria Pendleton couldn't really cope with the pressure of strictly straight after the Olympics so her popularity could only take her do far and she was up against another very popular Olympian in Louis Smith.

I think the best chance of getting a female sports woman winner is to have a female gymnast as suggested before as it's a discipline like dance that involves similar techniques of rhythm and movement....either that or a figure skater.

Last year seemed to me to be non-fixed, even though there were 3 women who had the most dance experience, Simon had a chance and Thom seemed to have dance potential. They were both with capable pros, as were the 3 top women. It does seem that dance experience is very difficult to overcome with the short lead in to the show.

Gabby Logan was a much, much better dancer than Kenny, but Kenny lasted a lot longer - partly due to weird judge thought processes.

Denise was beaten by a very good dancer, but might have won in another series.
I agree that in the USA they seem to be more prepared to have sports people who have potential. On Strictly we have had a lot of sportsmen with two left feet.

Yes last year seemed less fixed but it did seem they wanted a greater male presence in the finals after the all female final of the year before - I do think they eliminated the one male with greatest chance of winning - Jake - simply because he wasn't doing the tour - he wasn't the best dancer but it would have been a more interesting final if he'd been in it, as a result you knew it was going to be a female winner again simply because both Mark and Simon had been in the dance off 3 times....Simon was good but his momentum came too late to recover and be seen as a contender.

Plus the outrage with Pixie getting eliminated. Easily the strongest dancer but the very week she announces she is not on tour she is sent packing.
