In case anyone else like me, failed to have these auto update, Adobe has released a new version of Adobe Reader, XI, and updated Flash to version 11.7.700.169, check if you have the latest version here, if you don't, download here (make sure to unselect free download).

Any thoughts? Is it safe, (i.e. if ticked by McAfee is reliable) or bogus?
It is quite possible that what you saw was a generic warning about installing stuff from the interweb. It does not necessarily mean that what you are installing is harmful. It just means that you need to be certain of the source of whatever it is you are installing. If you've obtained the software from a trusted source then hopefully there won't be any problems.
I just went onto the link you provided to see if I had the latest version and apparently I don't (for Flash, but seems strange I thought I did update it) This is my version: 11,6,602,180
Maybe this could be the cause to the PDF's failing? I shall update the Flash Player now.
EDIT: Just updated it and checked on the same link but still saying I have that number...
I would be tempted to zap Reader into oblivion anyway and install something like Foxit which does the same job and doesn't take over your computer like Adobe Reader seems to want to.

Just download the free version.
